Job Description
 

A summer research internship is available in the Drug Metabolism Department at the Foster City, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in a master's degree or graduate program with a major aligned with the scope of the work.  There are two options for the summer project.  The first would suit a candidate with strong analytical chemistry or bioanalytical skills, especially with hands-on experience with mass spectrometry.  That project would involve identification of metabolites of drug candidates generated in vitro.  The other option would suit a candidate with an understanding and experience of enzymology and enzyme kinetics.  That project would involve developing assays for unusual enzymes found to be involved in the metabolism of drugs.

Key Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The candidate should be enrolled in a master's or graduate program majoring in biochemistry, cell biology, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical science, or other related life science majors.
  • The summer internship positions are in Drug Metabolism Department to focus on developing either robust systems for metabolite generation or for in vitro enzymology.
  • The candidate will gain experience in various ADME assays and analytical techniques (e.g., enzymes, subcellular fractions, hepatocyte culture systems, and mass spectrometry)
  • Under general supervision, the candidate will plan and execute experiments, develop new assays, select appropriate reagents and controls, and discuss results in team meetings. The candidate will participate in group meetings and may be expected to present the results of their work at the end of the internship to the department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
  • Authorized to work in the United States without Sponsorship now or in the future or CPT/OPT through your University
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. based university or college and enrolled in the fall semester after the completion of the internship
  • Must be a Rising Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in undergrad or enrolled in an advanced degree program
  • Must be able to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between May and August
  • Must be able to relocate if necessary and work at the designated site for the duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Able to work independently in a laboratory environment (accurate pipetting and weighing)
  • Ability to identify issues and seek solutions
  • Ability to work both independently and collab
