Position Summary

Operate ballast undercutting machine to remove fouled ballast from railroad track structure, clean removed ballast and re- distribute on existing track structure.

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life
• Operate undercutter in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant policies and procedures
• Perform daily safety and maintenance checks & Checklist
• Clean undercutter as scheduled and/or required
• Ensure undercutter is safely and securely stored
• Advise Superintendent of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
• Responsible for routine maintenance & repairs
• Practice workplace safety
• Maintain parts inventory

 

Required Skills and Qualifications 

• The knowledge, skills and abilities required for satisfactory job performance
• Specialized safety apparatus associated with Plasser RM80 Undercutter
• Intimate knowledge of operation, maintenance and repair of Plasser RM80 Undercutter
• Track construction and maintenance techniques
• Workplace safety requirements and procedures
• Safety & Operational record keeping
• Operate undercutter in a safe and responsible manner
• Team Building
• Analytical and problem solving skills
• Decision making skills
• Effective communications skills
• Communicate effectively in English including reading & writing
• Read & understand Plasser RM80 Undercutter electrical & hydraulic schematics
• Certified welder or equivalent training

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• The Undercutter Operator/Mechanic has a physically strenuous and demanding job.
• He/she will be lifting, pulling and managing heavy equipment and objects.
• The Undercutter Operator/ Mechanic will have to work in all weather, and must be prepared for both extreme heat and cold.
• The Undercutter Operator/Mechanic must ensure that all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way.

 

Other Requirements

• The Undercutter Operator/Mechanic must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. 
• The Undercutter Operator/Mechanic must be able to pass FRA 214 Roadway Worker Protection and any customer mandated safety courses
