Position Summary

Regular attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. 
 
This position will provide trade specific design review, construction inspection, support of contractor coordination, and warranty phase issues resolution for electrical systems. Design review support is typically carried out during 75 - 90% construction documents but involvement during pre-design for planning purposes and involvement in schematic / design development may be required as well.  Construction inspections include equipment and system level quality assurance carried out in alignment with the commissioning process (as applicable) to confirm all installations and construction conform to University standards, codes, and ordinances. This position requires daily review of construction project blueprints, specifications and the use of a computerized project management system (Unifier) used for communicating with construction project teams and logging issues as applicable, throughout a given project. The position maintains open communication with any MSU IPF Maintenance Shops that it supports (Electrical, Plumbing, Steam, HVAC, Fire Alarm, etc.).
 
The breakdown of responsibilities are as follows: 

40%  Carry out construction site inspections to ensure electrical systems, equipment and assemblies are constructed to specified internal and external design documentation utilizing electronic tools such as, but not limited to Unifier, PlanGrid, AutoDesk Build, Meridian, Planon and various trade specific field verification checklists. Produce administrative and field reports related to observations made during site inspections. Assist commissioning processes with regular coordination and collection / reporting of site and equipment information. Support the resolution of post-construction and warranty issues that arise after substantial completion or occupancy. 

20%  Review design and/or construction documents to ensure compliance with MSU Construction Standards and codes utilizing various project management tools such as, but not limited to Unifier, PlanGrid, Office 365,  Build, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, others. Regularly attends job progress meetings when applicable.
  
10%  Engage IPF Electrical Maintenance Services in order to maximize inspection productivity and provide administrative oversight on submission of design/construction comments submitted by subject matter experts to ensure they are received by design/construction project teams. Provide in-house inspections as applicable.

10%  Carryout pre-design investigations to better prepare construction documents for the bid process, which may include, but is not limited to coordination of existing system investigations / shut-downs / tie-ins.

10%  Engage in special projects related to electrical planning, design, construction, and/or operations and maintenance. This may include but is not limited to facility condition assessment report reviews, campus arc-flash studies, and electrical asset mapping.

10%  Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates degree or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience;
  • possession of a State of Michigan Master Electrician license;
  • eight years of experience, including at least three years of experience at MSU in the skilled trades' electrical field or equivalent;
  • expert knowledge of word processing, project planning, work order, and/or database software;
  • expert knowledge of blueprint reading and print reviews to assist consultants in compiling with MSU construction standards; and to enforce contractor compliance with the construction documents;
  • knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade;
  • expert knowledge of applicable codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal) which includes the National Electrical Code and related laws/regulations;
  • possession of a valid vehicle operator's license and must drive a vehicle to perform job duties of this classification;
  • This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
