The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department’s mission is to “work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.”

This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as an Advanced Practitioner RN Specialist-F/C within Clinical Services. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who works seamlessly across all sections within the program office. This role requires the use of independent judgment, a proactive approach to responsibilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting. Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.
  • The incumbent must spend at least 75 percent of his or her time performing duties which involve contact with patients or inmates in a correctional or forensic facility or institution.
  • This is a highly responsible position in the expanded role of professional psychiatric nursing, providing psychiatric care and performing certain medical acts within protocols established mutually with the Medical Service director, and in conformance with specialized certification. The incumbent in this position identifies nursing and mental health related problems. Plans and implements nursing care to resolve identified problems, provides management and care of acute and chronic mental health problems, and engages in the teaching of general health care. May be required to provide psychiatric on-call coverage for nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Makes daily rounds with psychiatrists(s) and jointly manages acute and/or chronic conditions.
  • Monitors, initiates, and/or alters appropriate medications for specific conditions, according to interpretation of diagnostic testing, within the established written protocol.
  • Evaluates and assesses psychiatric conditions.
  • Writes monthly summaries on designated persons.
  • Assists psychiatrist in preparing petitions and clinical summaries for legal action.
  • Compiles intra-hospital admission, discharge and/or transfer summaries.
  • Plans and conducts individual and/or group therapy.
  • Assists in hospital specialt
