Facilitates clinical management and continuity of care for patients with advanced heart failure who require complex surgical interventions. Serves as a resource person and educator for patients, families, and other staff.  Coordinates medical and nursing research activities relative to surgical heart failure patients.  Supervises the activities of the Clinical Engineering staff.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the evaluation and screening of patients for ventricular support in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Assesses pre- and post-operative Mechanical Circulatory Support Device (MCSD) patients during clinic visits and arranges for routine diagnostic testing and physician consultationCommunicates with cardiologists, referring physicians and other health professionals regarding patient condition and needs. 
  • Assists various departments in the development of specifications for medical equipment acquisitions and the evaluation of new technology for patient care. 
  • Seeks opportunities to build and develop referrals to the Tendick CenterParticipates in marketing/public relations activities for the Tendick Center. 
  • Serves as a resource and support person for MCSD patients and their family members through teaching, counseling, and discharge planningProvides instructional introductory materials to pre-MCSD patients. 
  • Monitors, evaluates and communicates relevant data regarding clinical problems to appropriate members of the interdisciplinary team for both inpatients and outpatients. 
  • Monitors progress of hospitalized MCSD patients and collaborates with other team members to ensure continuity of careFollows-up on patient condition as needed by maintaining telephone contact when patient returns home. 
  • Coordinates ongoing medical and nursing research activities relative to MCSD patientsParticipates in research, attends planning and update meetings related to study protocols, and participates in the design, plan and execution of LVAD protocols. 
  • Establishes protocols and policies related to the care of the MCSD patients and updates them in compliance with the Joint Commission on Accreditation, and other regulatory bodies. 
  • Serves as consultant and liaison to health care professionals throughout the hospital. 
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations. 
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the Aurora Health Care Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to Aurora's business. 

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) May obtain within 6 months based on department discretion.
