Job Duties

VDOT Northern Virginia District is seeking a Senior Supervisor Traffic Engineer (PE Licensed) to supervise and train professional engineering and technical staff. You will plan, develop, coordinate and monitor activities of engineers responsible for the technical review, analyses and approval of engineering activities. Lead projects across functional areas of the department. Provide project management and leadership to include planning, supervising, organizing, monitoring and directing work activities of staff and resources. Coordinate activities with management, stakeholders, customers, and key individuals throughout VDOT. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.

Responsibilities may include but not be limited to:

Plan Review and Coordination- Be the primary point of contact on assigned projects. Provide traffic engineering support to VDOT, County, locality, Land Development and Permit projects. Review plans, reports and other materials submitted by various sections and provide input on the technical details of the projects. Ensure that comments and/or recommendations are provided in a timely manner.

Conduct Engineering Studies- Provide oversight to the collection/processing of traffic data for engineering studies, safety and operational analysis. Review data, recommendations, and alternative solutions for accuracy and compliance. Prepare business correspondence and technical letters for suggested corrective measures as a result of studies. Present formal presentations. Provide written supporting documentation to management to support traffic engineering decisions.

Responsible Charge Engineer- Fulfill duties as responsible charge engineer in compliance with policies, procedures and the Code of Virginia.
Communications Respond to technical inquiries from employees, the public, local government agencies, stakeholders and other special interest groups. Establish and maintain timely communications and close working relations with project team members to ensure vital technical project information is disseminated.

Transportation Plan Development- Provide oversight to the preliminary engineering functions of Traffic Engineering. Attend various project related meetings to discuss or clarify traffic control requirements, the design of traffic engineering related items, and respond to any questions that may arise. Review temporary traffic control plans and estimates of traffic control devices for accuracy and compliance.

Team Leadership- Supervise team of engineers and technicians. Assign projects and task, monitor work progress and provide guidance. Promote training and development opportunities.

Leadership and Program Support- Provide leadership and direction to assigned engineering team. Provide technical support and assistance to VDOT staff in other divisions or districts on projects as needed to meet goals. Prepare and review technical reports. Act as team and technical lead for projects and proposals. Provides technical leadership to engineers and technical staff. Provides recommendations on various technical aspects of assigned engineering program.

Work Zone Safety Support- Provide oversight and direction to agency design, construction, maintenance and permit staff regarding work zone and traffic control plans to ensure conformance with established guidelines and the safe and efficient flow of traffic. Provide guidance to field applications of work zones and review the recommended adjustments. Respond to requests from Residency staff for assistance in setting up traffic control layouts and devices in emergency response situations.

Crash Studies- Manage the performance of crash data retrieval, analysis, and safety studies for internal and external customers. Direct staff to plan and conduct proactive safety analysis with respect to the SHSP emphasis areas. Lead safety analysis and research methods to ensure that study findings are thorough and accurate. Direct and schedule the timely compilation of crash data for annual summary report and documentation of trends for each highway system.
