Department Summary

The Office of the Provost (OtP) is responsible for carrying out the academic mission of the University of Oregon (UO). The office works collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance academic excellence, student success, and the UO’s overall academic profile. Led by the provost and senior vice president, the OtP is a dynamic, caring community of colleagues committed to the core values of integrity, trust, equity, collaboration, and excellence. The OtP supports and coordinates matters that pertain to faculty success, including hiring, retention, promotion, leadership development, and tenure processes. We promote the highest standards in teaching, research, and service, working closely with schools, colleges, and other critical academic units to promote institutional and personal flourishing. We are responsible for academic financial allocations and the alignment of resources with strategic academic priorities. In service to the public mission of the UO, the OtP cultivates reciprocal relationships of engagement and outreach with communities at the local, regional, and national levels and across the globe.

Position Summary

The Communications Generalist, Graphic Design (Generalist) is responsible for providing communications support to the Office of the Provost (OtP), as well as units within it, including Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) and the Division of Global Engagement (DGE) . This position works closely with and is supervised by the Director of Communications for OtP.

Under the guidance of the Director, the Generalist assists with designing visual communications content for print, digital, and other media to support institutional priorities and OtP programs.

This position provides communications support, coordination, and project management for UESS programs that serve students. This includes designing high-quality and creative marketing and branding materials for print, digital, social media, websites, and video. The generalist will learn the UO Brand and Style Guide and help educate and provide solutions for OtP and UESS clients to follow those guidelines in their print and digital materials.

The position will also be tasked with website design and content management, social media content creation and planning, as well as work on special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization which involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media. At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.

A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely-related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.

Professional Competencies

• Excellent communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and content editing skills.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
• Ability to use Canva.
• Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Demonstrated high-functioning organizational skills, including an ability to manage time and projects efficiently in an environment of shifting priorities, and experience using a project management system.
• Commitment and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate in a cross-functional team, with multiple persons and projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in higher education.
• Experience performing professional graphic design work for digital and print applications.
• Experience working on quick- turn projects.
