About the role
Chime is seeking an experienced Financial Operations (FinOps) Engineer to join our Engineering Services team. As the first dedicated FinOps engineer at Chime, you will be responsible for establishing a strong operational cost management program at Chime. This will include building and recommending cloud cost analysis tools, creating automated budget reporting and alerting, performing deep technical analysis into utilization of our SaaS vendors, and establishing process and best practices for cost management. You will also be partnering closely with engineering managers to prioritize technical optimizations, as well as working with Finance and Procurement teams for budget planning, contract negotiation, and spend forecasting.
The base salary offered for this role and level of experience will begin at $149,300 and up to $207,300. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
In this role, you can expect to:
- Establish and own the cost analytics tools for tracking spend across cloud (AWS) and SaaS vendors (Datadog, Snowflake, etc.)
- Build the frameworks for reporting spending, cost projections, budget compliance, and anomalies to leaders in Engineering and Finance departments.
- Perform technical deep dives into Chime's cloud usage to identify misconfiguration, non-optimal architecture, and areas for engineering optimization.
- Work with internal teams to develop and implement best practices for cloud cost governance, including tagging standards and anomaly alerting.
- Maintain a catalog of Chime products and their associated budget, and develop models for predicting scaling cost (cost-per-user, etc.)
- Partner with Finance teams on budget forecasting, invoice reconciliation, and reporting.
- Proactively work with product and engineering leaders across Chime to plan for growth of existing services and new products.
- Stay abreast of vendor pricing, trends, and announcements.
To thrive in this role, you have/are:
- Deep knowledge of AWS services, including pricing models, discount tiers, instance families, tagging best practices, and optimization methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with optimizing AWS usage, including performing deep technical analysis into service configuration and utilization.
- Expert experience in managing AWS cost and billing tools, including Cost Explorer, Budgets, Cost and Usage Reports, Billing, etc.
- Demonstrated success in building company-wide programs for show-back and budget reporting, creating automated budget threshold and cost variance alerting, and proactively monitoring and reacting to spending trends across multiple cloud and SaaS vendors.
- Demonstrated success in partnering closely with Finance and Procurement teams to perform forecasting, budget planning, and purchasing.
- Experience influencing engineering leaders of all levels, including providing technical recommendations.
- Experience with at least one 3rd party cloud cost management tool (Cloudability, Yotascale, etc.)
- Strong presentation skills, including the ability to build and present clear and impactful reports for executives, department heads, and engineering managers.
- Hands-on experience with an infrastructure-as-code or configuration management tool (we use Terraform.)
- Ability to perform light coding in Ruby, Python, or TypeScript.
- A collaborative self-starter with a strong sense of ownership.
