About the role

We are seeking a Sr. Software Engineer.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Service extract, transform, and load (ETL) requests from the clinical research community for data from our information systems such as and Epic Clarity, Epic Data Warehouse, Sunrise Clinical Manager, CaseMix/DataMart, and EPR2020.
  • This includes the ability to meet with researchers to understand their needs, write a specification that reflects the work to be done, extract data from the appropriate source systems, transform the data to meet the customers’ needs, package the data into the appropriate format for transmittal, and set up recurring ETL jobs.
  • This position will also work on i2b2 as needed. I2b2 is a tool which allows researchers to use a drag and drop user interface to explore deidentified data for research use.
  • Research informatics support for EPIC, i.e. Cogito data warehouse validation process and data element evaluation for ACO; Continue maintain and support for CRU Online and gSurvey application, build extra reporting and exporting; excel spreadsheet functions for both application for large dataset output; Enhance ICTR Connection request/management system for allowing multiple review scoring sheets and multiple versions for request form.
  • Trials at Hopkins search engine query not only from depository database but also from clinicaltrials.gov; Centralized JHED login for all applications through ICTR web server, secured with cross site scripting prevention as well as log monitor mechanisms.
  • Ongoing development of online ICTR evaluation/survey tolls and IRB Survey system, Clinical research network investigator information registration form.
  • ICTR utility report and email list report; Real-time, on-demand, linked utilization and financial reporting, providing overall budgetary expenditures on yearly grant awards.
  • Data sharing with current and future institutional databases (e.g., eiRB, EPIC), eiRB feed.
  • Registry service for ICTR annual events, such as Henrietta Lacks Memorial Lecture and Introduction to Clinical Research Course; Database design services for ICTR supported principal investigators and their study team.


Roles & Interactions

  • The Sr. Software Engineer will take their primary direction for day-to-day tasks from the ICTR Informatics Project Manager.
  • They will often interact with their research community customers, including principal investigators, physicians, research nurses, study coordinators, and research data managers to help solve their data needs.
  • They will also work closely with research informaticians.


Specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible.

  • This position is responsible for all ICTR Informatics extraction projects tracked in our JIRA system. These projects vary from month to month but in general include extracting, transforming, and loading data.
  • They must have a good understanding of at least one of our primary information systems (Epic, SCM, EPR) and will be expected to learn the data infrastructure of the remaining applications.


Scale/size of area, project and/or system supported.

  • This engineer will access systems which contain data for about 5M patients for Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, Howard County General Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, and Suburban Hospital.


Required & Preferred skills specific to position.

  • This position requires 4 or more years of experience as a Microsoft SQL server data analysis, with experience in TSQL, SSIS and stored procedure development.
  • This position requires mastery of clinical data in at least one of the following systems: Epic, Sunrise Clinical Manager, EPR2020, CaseMix/DataMart.
  • In addition to the technical skills listed, this position requires previous demonstration of good teamwork skills, the ability to write clear requirements and design documents, and the ability to be successfully in direct customer-facing interactions.


On Call Requirements

  • This position does not currently have on call requirements, however, on call could be introduced in the future to support i2b2.
  • If that were to occur, then they would share on call responsibilities with teammates, being on call 24x7 about 1 week per month and receiving the standard IT@JH stipend for this service.


Primary Purpose

  • Participate in the development of solutions using extensive programming/analytical expertise for long-term projects to include maintenance, modification or development of applications/solutions.
