Leadperson - Water Distribution

The City of Topeka is seeking three qualified individuals to serve as Leadpersons in the Water Distribution division. Under the general supervision of the Foreperson, this position assists with supervisory work in planning, coordinating and directing the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution system. Work may involve minimal supervision and may serve as a crew leader/member to accomplish tasks, procedures and guidelines.

Primary duties include:

• Assisting the supervisor by providing feedback for staff's evaluations; maintain accountability for work performance and behavior of assigned work.
• Assisting in the accomplishment of and/or directing all tasks necessary for the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair and metering of a water distribution system as well as treatment facilities' equipment and components.
• Assisting with work orders, scheduling, assigning and coordinating work.

The ideal candidate:

• Has the ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
• Possesses comprehensive knowledge of an assortment of hand and power tools and heavy equipment.
• Has the ability to keep accurate, detailed records.
• Has the ability to interpret and comprehend written specifications, standards, maps and blue prints.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka’s insurance carrier and must possess and maintain a valid Class A Kansas Commercial driver's license.
• Minimum of four (4) years' experience in the construction, maintenance, inspection and repair of water distribution system, pumping and tower operations and/or meters.
• Basic levels of the Microsoft Office Suite and GIS mapping and records
• Possess the following certifications:
  • Forklift
  • Trench Competent Person
  • Confined Space Entry
  • First Aid / CPS / AED

May be required to obtain:

• Right-of-Way License (Railroad right-of-ways)
• Distribution System Operation and Maintenance and/or Water Treatment Operator II - California State University, Sacramento correspondence course or equivalent
• Utility Management - California State University, Sacramento correspondence course or equivalent
• To be ACI 1 certified or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire
• To be nuclear gauge safety certified
• Traffic Control Certification

Starting rate of pay is $22.72 - $23.43 per hour, DOQ
