Principal DevOps Engineer

About the role
As a Principal DevOps Engineer at Siteimprove, you will play a decisive role in leading the direction of the DevOps capabilities and driving the maturity of our AWS environment. Your primary responsibility will be to define the strategic roadmap and drive the design and implementation of our platform infrastructure as we level up the maturity of our platform. You will collaborate closely with software engineering teams to ensure seamless deployment and operation of services, and you will provide technical leadership of the continuous improvement and modernization efforts within the team. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop a modernized platform driving a large migration of workloads from a self-managed Kubernetes cluster to EKS.

What you will be doing
- Architect, implement and maintain scalable, secure, and reliable AWS infrastructure for our SaaS platform.
- Support a team of DevOps engineers, providing guidance and mentorship to the team, and wider community.
- Evangelise DevOps practices across software engineering teams
- Implement, manage, and develop next-gen CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment processes.
- Define business-wide DevOps strategy, integrating into Engineering teams
- Lead compliance with security best practices and industry standards (ISO27001/FedRAMP).
- Responsible for strategic initiatives, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with established goals.
- Act as a subject matter expert on DevOps best practices with infrastructure as code, scaling, and compliance
What we will require of you
- 8+ years experience in a DevOps/Engineering role
- Expert understanding AWS services, including EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, CloudFormation and EKS
- Deep understanding of Kubernetes, EKS, service mesh, and related concepts
- Strong experience in delivering robust CI/CD solutions into complex environments
- Subject matter expert in infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform or similar tools.
- Evidential experience in delivering compliant cloud environments (ISO/FedRAMP/etc)
- Practical expertise in performance tuning and optimization, bottleneck problem analysis
- Experience of tooling such as ArgoCD, Helm, and Jenkins
- Expert knowledge of networking concepts (e.g., VPC, subnetting, routing).
- Experience with AWS Well-Architected Framework and best practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Ownership of the development and delivery of strategic plans.
- Experience articulating strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
- Hands-on experience with Jira for project management and Agile methodologies.

- Solid understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and experience in integrating DevOps
- Knowledge of serverless computing and experience in leveraging serverless technologies, such as AWS Lambda, for cost-effective and scalable solutions.
- The ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
