GENERAL SUMMARY

The Risk Manager reports to the Manager of Risk Management/Patient Safety. The Risk Manager's primary job function is to provide the leadership and management skills necessary to oversee the daily administration of SOMC's risk management activities which includes but is not limited to; administering the program, managing and analyzing data, conducting risk management educational programs, coordinating the tracking system for categorizing and responding to patients complaints, and complying with Joint Commission's risk management related standards - all with the objective of controlling and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required

• Master's Degree in related field preferred

Licensure:

• Licensed to practice as an RN in Ohio required

• American Society Healthcare Risk Manager preferred

Experience:

• Through education and/or work experience, must possess or have the ability to demonstrate or learn understanding of medical terminology, overall hospital operations, and principles of quality management, financial loss risk, principles of risk management and accreditation standards and principles; ability and experience in adjusting, analyzing, investigating and resolving claims.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time. 

1. Conducts risk management educational programs including New Nurse Orientation, New Resident Orientation, New Provider Orientation, ED/family medicine resident education and Safety Champion education.

2. Manages and responds to risk related patient complaints through a coordination of efforts with patient relations to facilitate the investigative analysis, recommendations and risk identification.

3. Complies with Joint Commission's risk management related and National Patient Safety Goal Standards. Reviews and facilitates the completion of Sentinel event alerts issued by the Joint Commission.

4. Coordinates, facilitates and manages investigation analysis, recommendations and risk identification based on trends identified through the incident reporting system to the appropriate department managers, and/or administrative personnel for further analysis and corrective action to eliminate or reduce risk.

5. Evaluate and abstract data and effectively analyze that data in preparation for litigation and for all Safety Dashboard cases; Demonstrate judgment in working with confidential and peer review protected data.

6. Coordinates with HIM for preparation of documents for the organization's defense attorney and summarizes cases by creating a timeline of events. Communicates with defense attorneys to discuss strategy, problems, strengths and weakness of the case; Prepare staff for depositions; Inform the supervisor/manager of all high risk and potential problem cases.

7. Provide litigation updates and reports; Attend quarterly TPA claim review meeting, the Risk Management Committee meeting and other meetings as needed. Represents Patient Safety on medical staff meetings (including P&T Committee, Joint Commission Leadership, Transfusion Practice and others as required.

8. Leads claim investigation and litigation management with the hospital's liability carrier and with legal counsel in response to and resolution of issues that could result in financial harm to the hospital such as liability, malpractice and negligence of staff and providers.

9. Coordinates crediting and write offs for Hospital Acquired Conditions and works with appropriate entities to ensure compliance.

10. Interprets and develops policies, procedures, and standards regulations as appropriate to employees, medical staff, patients and the public.

11. Contributes and fosters the team approach in all hospital operations.

12. Conducts root cause analyses, reviews and coordinates action plans; facilitates appropriate interventions as needed, and conducts failure mode event analysis.
