Description

The Criminal Justice Program within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education, at the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in Criminal Justice to begin August 2026. We seek a broadly trained teacher-scholar who will contribute to the growth of a dynamic criminal justice program. 

Responsibilities include teaching 18 credits per academic year (typically three courses per semester), establishing an ongoing program of research, mentoring students in research, academic advising, and engaging in service activities that support the department, college, and university.

The Criminal Justice Program is situated in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice. It is closely connected to the sociology program, with numerous cross-listed courses and double majors. Criminal Justice program faculty offer courses as part of the Criminal Justice Administration concentration in the Master’s in Public Administration (MPA).

The University is located in downtown Flint, which is experiencing a dynamic revitalization rich with opportunities for community engagement, experiential learning, research collaboration, and practice in criminal justice. The Genesee County courthouse and jail are within walking distance from campus. Genesee Valley Regional Center, a juvenile detention center; and Thumb Correctional, a medium security prison are just a short drive from campus. Flint is also home to many grassroots and nonprofit organizations that support returning citizens, children of incarcerated parents, and members of the community with mental health and substance abuse challenges.

As a regional campus of the University of Michigan, faculty have access to significant resources, including a vast library system, teaching support, internal funding opportunities, and potential collaboration opportunities with several regional colleges and universities. We are seeking candidates who are excited by the opportunities that the University offers and who wish to be part of this energy and growth. The University of Michigan - Flint boasts an enrollment of over 7,100 graduate and undergraduate students, and sits on a beautiful 75-acre riverfront campus in downtown Flint, Michigan. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, or related discipline with expertise in Criminal Justice or Criminology by the start date. Candidates with an ABD PhD with a dissertation defense by May 2026 will also be considered

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated critical, intersectional, and social justice-oriented approach to the work
  • Ability to teach criminology and in the area of policing, criminal law, or restorative justice
  • Documented success at program leadership and/or development
  • Record of engaging deeply in the community and creating partnerships with local organizations, policymakers, and institutions
  • Exhibited excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, preferably in multiple modalities (e.g. in-person and online)
  • Coherent program of research that lends itself to student involvement, as evidenced by research productivity and potential
  • Quantitative expertise to teach general statistics and work with colleagues in GIS and data analytics
