Overview

The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements, which may be inherent in the position.

 

Job Summary:    Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records.  Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.  They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

 

Reports To:          Director of Pharmacy         Supervises:           None

 

Some of the many skills performed

A.   Procures and distributes drug orders per physician request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols, and within specified time frame

·         Fills physicians’ prescriptions and aids pharmacists in preparing

·         Identifies and aids in the procurement of specialty medications

·         Prepares sterile products accurately per 797,795,800 guidelines.

·         Delivers medications and supplies to patients as per protocols

B.   Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specified time frame.

·         Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies

·         Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.

·         Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

·         Prepackages medications in unit of use containers.

C.  Contributes to the effective operation of the department

·         Picks up prescriptions and medications for future filling.

·         Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately in billing process.

·         Generates reports, pick lists and labels as required.

·         Answers the telephone, identifying self and department.  Directs calls to appropriate personnel.

·         Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.

·         Organizes and prioritizes work assignments. 

·         Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately.  Files in appropriate locations.

·         Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.

·         Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat and well-organized.  Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.

D.   Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department.

·         Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.

·         Conducts quality monitors, collects data and completes documentation, as assigned.

E.   Maintains competency required for current job title/position.

·         Attends staff meetings.  Participates in orientation, education and training programs.  Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.

·         Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.

F.   Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

                       High School Graduate or Equivalent preferred.

                       College Preferred, but not required

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

                        Registration with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.

                        Pharmacy Technician Certification acquired

EXPERIENCE:

                         5 Years Retail pharmacy experience preferred
