The role of Undergraduate Designer Intern is intended to start in Summer 2025.

A 3M Design Internship is a unique opportunity to apply skills you’ve learned in design school to create solutions to design challenges on a global scale. If selected, you’ll work with experienced designers on priority projects that add value to 3M’s business and the world. You’ll also have the chance to collaborate and network with fellow designers and interns from top schools.

Our robust onboarding experience sets our interns up for success, interns are truly part of the team with 3M’s internal design group. All interns receive coaching and support from designers with deep experience at 3M and with other well-known brands. Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an accredited institution.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Graphic Design, Design Communication, Industrial Design, UX/UI or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Possess a growth mind-set with an abundance of creativity and passion.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, a storyteller for design with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Have experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Have relevant experience in design programs such as Adobe, Figma, SolidWorks, Sketchbook pro, etc.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Be self-motivated, eager to learn, and proactive in problem-solving.

About the Safety & Industrial Business Group:

The Safety and Industrial Business Group (SIBG) at 3M offers a diverse range of products designed to enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency across various industries. Key product categories include personal safety (respiratory, hearing, eye, and fall protection), abrasives (coated, bonded, and non-woven), adhesives and tapes (industrial adhesives and various tapes), electrical markets (electrical tapes, wire connectors, and cable management), automotive aftermarket (collision repair and automotive tapes and adhesives), and industrial and safety markets (safety solutions and industrial maintenance products).

3M looks for students currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in industrial, graphic, brand, UX and VR fields who have completed their junior year (or higher) by the time the internship begins. Top applicants possess strong coursework experience in illustration, visual branding, typography, photography, color and pattern; and excel at ideation, visualization and sketching. Successful candidates also have a strong portfolio of design work that demonstrates superior design skills and problem-solving processes
