The Clinical Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services at the Rosemary F. Furman Counseling Center at Barnard College is responsible for the provision of counseling and psychological services in the Rosemary F. Furman Counseling Center (Furman), which provides confidential psychological counseling and care for Barnard College students. The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services reports to the AVP of Health & Wellness, who oversees all student-facing clinical operations in the Department of Health & Wellness. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services will work cooperatively with Primary Care Health Services to ensure that student psychological services are accessible to referred students and to coordinate preventive programming at the LeFrak Center for Well-BCAeing. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services must collaborate with the AVP of H&W to ensure the functioning of the overall operation of the Service. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (Clinical Director) provides consultation and supervision for counseling and psychological services, including direct clinical care and supervision to the clinicians in Furman.Job Description:
Direct Client Care:
Function as a clinician within the counseling services, including emergency consultations. Provide skilled, ethical, evidence-based, comprehensive psychological care to students, including treating patients directly, providing telehealth services, participating in a rotational on-call duty to assist students in crisis, following up on outside emergency care, communicating and collaborating with other offices at the college (Primary Care Health Services, LeFrak Center for Well-Being, CARDS (Center for Accessibility, Resources and Disability Services), Dean of Students Office, etc), and consulting with outside providers and specialists.
Management and Oversight of Patient Care (Furman)
Direct supervision of clinical staff, including psychotherapists, post-doctoral students, interns and liaisons.
Work with the AVP of H&W to administer the mental health clinical services, including overseeing:
- the development and administration of policies and procedures by which the counseling service operates
- the scheduling of personnel and appointments
- the triage, intake process, case assignment, and case management
- treatment objectives and duration
- urgent/emergent evaluation
- referral procedures and hospitalization
- after-hours (24-hour) coverage and emergency procedures
- communication with after-hours phone triaging service
Work with the AVP of H&W and the training director to select and evaluate all counseling service therapists.
Organize regular case conferences, and other indicated professional education within the counseling services.
Schedule and oversee necessary professional development sessions to provide current clinical education to the Furman staff throughout the academic year. Manage all staff meetings and case discussions for Furman.
In collaboration with the AVP for H&W, design, schedule, and implement the orientation process for new psychotherapists.
Management and Oversight of Operations (Furman)
Work with AVP and Director of Operations to coordinate staffing, budget preparation, allocation of resources, policy, and long-range planning for the Counseling Service and make recommendations to the H&W leadership.
Assure the provision of quality care within the Service, including its documentation in charts and other records.
Ensure the maintenance of documentation of Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to enable the student health services to meet ambulatory facility accreditation standards. Collaborate with the AVP of H&W to develop the Quality Improvement (QI) program across departments–direct clinical care, behavioral care, and health promotion and education--adhering to the robust guidelines of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, inclusive of overseeing direct studies by providers, peer reviews, and benchmarking.
