The Staff Counselor (Los Angeles Campus) will provide individual psychological evaluation, short-term psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referrals, and case management support to a diverse group of students in psychological/emotional distress and/or experiencing emotional and adjustment difficulties. The Staff Counselor will provide direct professional clinical services to students to support the developmental and psychological growth and adaptation of students. The Staff Counselor will collaborate with the Los Angeles Student Life team to provide team care, offer occasional longer-term psychotherapy and psychiatry. The Staff Counselor will have the opportunity to facilitate therapy groups, with the potential to conduct outreach and workshop programming for the campus community, and other ancillary and consultative work for Los Angeles campus. The Staff Counselor will consult and collaborate with the Student Life team campus partners regarding psychological emergencies, mental health challenges, and joint programming and participate in all efforts to provide a safe and inclusive environment to students both within the Los Angeles Campus and in the wider Emerson community. The position is part-time, up to 15 hours per week, including 1 night per week (Wednesday). The Staff Counselor is responsible for scheduling meetings with students, which can be in-person or virtual.

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Provide confidential individual psychological evaluation, short-term psychotherapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, referrals, and case management to students with diverse backgrounds and ethnicities who are in psychological/emotional distress.

  • May provide outreach and programming offerings to the campus community including training of Resident Assistants and Residence Directors, crisis debriefings, and workshops. 

  • Consult with Student Life staff regarding student mental health, well-being, clinical and administrative matters and intercultural awareness.

  • Maintain appropriate clinical records and confidential treatment notes by writing on-going case notes, intake processes in accordance with California state laws.

  •  Complete administrative duties as needed, which may include coordinating outreach programming, developing a group therapy program, and/or other events.

  • Participate in external professional associations to maintain and extend clinical knowledge and expertise and to develop and deepen referral networks for students requiring specialized services off-campus; sustain and deepen knowledge base of best current practices in psychology and college mental health with regular educational activities.

  • Develop a referral network for students including psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and substance abuse counselors, as needed.
     

QUALIFICATIONSQualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.

  • Current CA Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) is required

  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology or Master’s in Social Work (MSW) or Master’s in Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy preferred; licensure as psychologist or social worker, LMHC or LMFT in California

  • 3+ years’ experience in college or community mental health required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESMay be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job. 

  • Strong clinical skills and a solid background in psychological crisis intervention and management

  • Knowledgeable about psychological trends on college campuses and with college-aged population

  • Ability to utilize electronic medical record and scheduling system (EHR) preferred

  • Ability to provide clinical services via HIPAA compliant telehealth platform preferred

  • Ability to effectively work with students from a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences, including historically underrepresented populations

  • Commitment to team building and collaboration

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Good computer skills, familiarity with Google Drive and Google Forms.
