Job Duties

To provide nursing care according to Orem’s theory. To support the recovery and rehabilitation treatment plans of SVP’s. Works under the supervision of the RN Manager I, upholding the professional image of the Nursing Department as a role model & mentor for other disciplines. Utilizing knowledge base & experience, the RN provides nursing care to SVP’s through the nursing processes, maintains a safe, therapeutic environment, using the least restrictive measures necessary & upholds the rights & dignity of the residents & their families at all times. The admission/ discharge RN will coordinate resident admissions and discharges. Working closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure resident needs are met and promote positive outcomes as they return to the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of professional nursing principles and techniques used in the assessment, care and treatment of individuals with mental illness, aging individuals, women, men, and culturally diverse individual’s unique healthcare needs respectively.
Knowledge of and skills: to complete specific training to perform in a distinct, complex and secure environment.
Knowledge of laws and regulations covering nursing practices relative to rules on resident/client protection for residents/clients with mental/psychological illness/disabilities.
Knowledge of principles and procedures of infection control in a high-risk environment to minimize the risk of the transmission of communicable diseases.
Knowledge of principles of effective, verbal, written and group communication to accurately and effectively communicate job related information.
Knowledge of medical terminology used in the assessment, care and treatment of residents/clients with mental/psychological illness/disabilities to support and assess mental health problems, work with physicians to develop care plans, assess crisis, provide support and education, and integrate internal and external mental health services.
-VA Registered Nurse licensure.

-Experience practicing as a registered nurse required.

Additional Considerations

Experience psychiatric, medical setting and/or correctional setting preferred.
