Summary: 

The Dishwasher plays a vital role in keeping our food service operations running smoothly and safely each day. This position supports the kitchen and campus dining areas through dishwashing, sanitation, restocking service areas, and assisting with basic food service needs. The Dishwasher helps maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for colleagues across campus and may assist with food service during periods of increased demand or staffing needs.

This role follows a part-time schedule (regularly scheduled to work 20 hours per week or more) onsite at our Headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Monday through Friday.

This role has a starting hourly rate of $18/hr.

What you will do:

  • Wash, rinse, sanitize, and properly store china, glassware, silverware, and kitchen equipment.

  • Clean and maintain the dish machine and report any equipment issues promptly.

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in kitchen workstations, pantries, front of house, and back of house areas.

  • Sweep and mop floors and maintain common kitchen areas according to established cleaning schedules.

  • Receive, label, date, and properly store food and paper products following food safety standards.

  • Remove trash, recycling, and clean trash receptacles in assigned areas.

  • Maintain the kitchen janitor closet and cleaning supplies.

  • Follow all HHMI safety, sanitation, and HACCP policies.

  • Assist with food service or serving duties as needed.

  • Work flexible shifts, including nights or weekends, when required.

What you bring:

  • Ability to communicate in written and oral English and perform basic arithmetic calculations.

  • At least six months of experience in utility work within a hotel, restaurant, or food service environment.

  • Comfort working with industrial cleaning supplies and commercial kitchen equipment.

  • Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team environment.

  • Willingness to follow established procedures and food safety standards.

  • Flexibility to adjust schedule when operational needs require evenings or weekends.

  • Working knowledge of kitchen equipment, dish machines, and general cleaning practices.

  • Pride in maintaining clean, safe, and well-organized workspaces.

Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to 40 pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
