Job Description
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the field of growth, processing, and characterization of inorganic films and coatings. You will actively participate in research aimed at gaining a better understanding of processes of ion beam modification and film growth by physical vapor deposition, with practical implications for the fabrication of components for high-power laser targets. This position is in the Nanoscale Integration Science group within the Materials for Emerging Applications and Extreme Conditions section of the Materials Science Division in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.
Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
You will
- Conduct experimental research in physical vapor deposition of films and coatings and ion beam modification of materials.
- Use a broad range of standard and advanced materials characterization and metrology tools.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Lead manuscript development and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
- Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
- PhD in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
- In-depth knowledge and practical experience in structural, compositional, and mechanical characterization of materials.
- Experience with a broad spectrum of materials characterization and metrology tools.
- Demonstrated wide range of research interests.
- Ability to work productively on multiple projects as demonstrated by meeting deadlines, goals, and requirements.
- Experience performing self-directed research, presenting talks at conferences and a record of publishing results in established scientific journals.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in publications and effective presentations at seminars, meetings, and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with plasma diagnostics such as electrostatic probes and ion energy spectrometers.
- Experience with designing, modifying, building, and automating vacuum systems.
- Experience with focused ion beam technology (FIB).
Pay Range
$123,048 Annually
