Non-Tenure Track Senior Lecturer in Art of the Modern Era

The Department of History of Art and Architecture at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position of Senior Lecturer in art of the modern era with a specialization in the transnational discourse of art in the age of empire and revolution (c. 17th-19th centuries). This 3-year renewable appointment begins in the 2024 fall semester. We seek a dynamic educator who teaches modern art in the imperial context to address the expansive relationships between colonizers and colonized. Area of specialization is open, but we seek scholars whose research and teaching engage cultural exchange in understudied and intellectually capacious geographic and historical situations such as, for example, the Caribbean, the Afro-Caribbean, Europe and the Global South, the Ottoman Empire, the Napoleonic Empire, the British Empire, and the Spanish Empire. The position’s teaching load is 3-3, including lecture courses in modern art and courses to be developed in the candidate’s area of specialization. We seek candidates who are receptive to contributing to the ongoing process of reconceptualizing (and teaching) the former survey of Western modern art from a decolonized perspective. There are opportunities to engage with the department’s "4 Plus 1" M.A. program, with a new core curriculum in the College of Arts and Science, and with initiatives across campus including the Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice (Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice | Vanderbilt University), the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies, the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery, and others. A Ph.D. required in hand no later than August 1, 2024; teaching experience preferred.
