About the role

ROLE OVERVIEW The Director, Business Development will identify, qualify, and support the close of onsite solar and storage opportunities with REITs, commercial, industrial, public, and municipal customers. The geographic and customer focus of this role will begin with a focus on the Colorado and Illinois markets, but both geography and market focus may change in the future. To be successful in this role, the Director will develop, nurture, and close a pipeline of onsite solar and storage opportunities, working closely with members of the CCES team to identify key markets and potential clients. The Director will assess sites for critical issues while developing relationships with stakeholders and participating in local and regional events to spur interest and support as needed. This role will also play a key role in coordinating work with other internal teams, as it relates to project feasibility, pricing, contract negotiation, and more.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a pipeline of onsite solar and storage opportunities in accordance with Pivot’s target opportunity model
  • Develop relationships with municipal and commercial real estate owners, including real estate investment trusts, and other key stakeholders to explore opportunities and expand Pivot’s onsite solar and storage footprint in key markets
  • Identify and understand community solar and other distributed generation program rules and requirements by market
  • Work with the marketing department to develop marketing plans, attend trade shows and conferences
  • Create proposals and present to corporate and municipal clients, including C-Suite executives and government officials 
  • Track opportunities and projects in our customer relationship management system, ensuring accurate information is shared across teams
  • Lead lease negotiations with support from our internal legal team
  • Manage third-party consultants and contractors to complete required diligence items related to a portfolio of solar and storage projects
  • Work with engineering to request layouts, our pre-construction team to create construction cost estimates, and our financial modeling team to develop proformas for the projects
  • Attend community events to discuss solar with stakeholders as required; periodically participate in local policy working groups to ensure market success
  • Assist with project finance requirements, in collaboration with the legal team
  • Prepare project deliverables for, and work closely with, Pivot’s Structured Finance team to ensure qualifying projects are ready for financial closings
  • Organize and maintain files, budgets, and project records using Pivot’s internal processes, databases, and project management software
  • Additional responsibilities as required

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • 5+ years of experience in renewable energy or commercial real estate development or management, or comparable professional experience
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills and a positive attitude to enhance the company’s reputation through interpersonal interactions
  • Comfort speaking in public while presenting Pivot project concepts to recommending and decision-making bodies
  • Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision and who is not afraid to ask questions and take on tasks outside of their comfort zone
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage complex evaluation processes for a significant number of sites to inform sound project siting and related project decision making
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to communicate complex concepts within and outside of Pivot
  • Experience with federal, state, and local permitting preferred, in particular with the preparation of applications and documents related to the development of renewable energy or real estate projects
  • Ability to anticipate project requirements and address long-lead time items to limit schedule slip
  • Understanding of real estate title, LLCs, tax maps, deeds, and parcel identification
  • Strong computer skills in all basic programs, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in Salesforce preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to sites and permitting authorities
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time, make own travel arrangements, and be self-reliant
