Department Overview
Provide ongoing education, orientation, competency validation, and clinical guidance for the respiratory staff. Coordinate and develop programs to successfully transition new staff into the various work units within the adult and pediatric hospitals. Develop, implement, and update annual competency validation programs. Assure that all organizational, hospital, and unit-based competency and required continuing education needs are met. Provide education and in-servicing to nurses, physicians, and other hospital staff as needed to support OHSU’s healthcare, research, and academic missions. Monitor tracking of in-service attendance records and maintain sign in logs. Assure that staff receive adequate in-service on all new equipment, processes, and policies. Develop the continuing education program for all respiratory staff. Ensure standards of care are being met as laid out by the Respiratory Care Services Standards of Care document within MCN, using chart audits. Coordinates clinical simulations and PRN educational themes based on chart audits, PSI’s, and concerns. Coordinates education days, Preceptor classes, and creation of evaluation tools. Other duties as delegated by Senior and Assistant Directors. The respiratory therapy staff educator will meet with Respiratory Senior leadership weekly, discussions to include check in, assessment of interventions, discuss barriers to forward momentum, and collaborate on any privatization of projects and education. Must be flexible and self-motivated as the needs of the department and organization change. Maintains clinical skill-set with regular patient care support that meet the operational needs of the department.
Function/Duties of Position
Training
- Assess learning needs of respiratory staff and develop educational strategies to meet those needs.
- Implements, coordinates, and/or facilitates educational programs based on identified learning needs and emerging trends. Including but not limited to the respiratory care departments.
- Assists in planning and providing educational programs as needed throughout the organization involving respiratory staff as appropriate.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate unit-based orientation.
- Mentors respiratory staff to develop within their current roles and for future professional growth.
- Provides feedback to leadership team regarding orientation process, progress of orientees, and preceptor roles.
- Facilitates and provides in-servicing for new equipment, processes, and policies utilizing appropriate resource methods.
- Maintains documentation of attendance rosters and list of all provided in services for regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate Webex (and other online platforms), live sessions and recordings to extend the availability of educational materials to all respiratory staff.
- Enter all required courses into Compass Learning Management System for New Employee Orientation.
- Enters position specific training courses into Compass Learning Management System when needed/identified through a variety of evaluation methods.
- Responsible for providing all respiratory staff with BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP training on schedule to ensure all team members are compliant.

Curriculum and Staff Development
- Develop/maintain various training modules for all employees in the Respiratory Services department.
- Conduct, at regular intervals, training needs assessments for all staff supervised by the Education Program Manager.
- Participates in assessment, establishment, and implementation of quality improvement and educational initiatives within the respiratory services department.
- Assists in determining competency validation process and implementation. Including yearly skills fair planning and participation.
- Evaluate and develop remediation plan for those not meeting competency.
- Stay current with advancements in respiratory care through continuous learning.
- Completes at least 5 chart audits per shift to determine improvements in documentation accuracy, billing, and compliance.
Clinical
- Work as clinical staff to support operational needs, promote teamwork, and stay apprised of current workflow/processes on all units within OHSU/DCH
- Assists with break and lunch coverage when needed.
- Acts as a liaison with other units in OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University) to assure that the unit’s patients receive adequate continuity of care.
