Job Title: Laboratory Manager
Location: Burton – Marston’s Brewery
Hours: 40 hours – Monday – Friday
Permanent – Full Time

Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is one of the leading, historic brewers in the UK. Formed out of a joint venture between Carlsberg UK and Marston’s PLC, we combine over 300 years of shared values, history, and heritage in UK brewing.
We are now recruiting for a Laboratory Manager to join us. Reporting to the Regional Breweries Quality Assurance Manager, this role will be responsible for managing a team of Lab Technicians, ensuring the highest quality standards are met in our brews.
Key Accountabilities:
- To lead all audits related to the laboratory, fulfilling/ implementing all quality standards and legal requirements agreed, corrective action plan and provide evidence that improvements are being achieved
- To ensure quality labs are kept in a high level of hygiene and 5S standards are maintained
- Ensuring data entry and reporting of analysis – weekly and monthly reports
- Continually support the learning and development of lab technicians per GLP requirements on basic methods, equipment maintenance & interpretation of results
- To ensure all lab methods are updated and co-ordinating effective and replicable SOPs/OPLs that provide consistency of approach and are validated and verified through auditing
- Assist in focused improvement activities, contributing to the team with knowledge, support and alignment of lean principles and skills
- Ensure right inputs for the controls related to chemical/Micro to maintain the site HACCP plan, will be an important player of site HACCP team
- Ensure compliance with internal proficiency scheme taking necessary action to address any areas of non-compliance
- Responsible for COSHH and risk assessments for the lab
- Responsibility for the development of direct reports supporting the company vision and behaviours. Hold regular 1-2-1 meetings and complete PDR process on time and in full of clear evidence to support scores awarded
Sampling & Testing Responsibilities:
Microbiological
- Accountable for complete Microbiology sampling & testing per group recommendations for Finished Goods/WIP/ Swab & Rinse samples and timely reporting of the results
- Support with any additional microbiological analysis on process and finished products to aid ongoing investigation and continuous improvement
- Responsible for all aspects of pure yeast culture management and propagation
- To Monitor & analyse, working closely with Operations/Quality to lead trouble shootings and investigations as required
- Work closely with Kersia to ensure all CIP/COP’s at brewery are in accordance with COM guidelines and jointly lead improvement plans
Chemical
- Accountable for complete Chemical sampling and testing according to the group/COM sample plan
- Support Carrying out additional analysis on in process and finished products to aid ongoing investigation and continuous improvement.
- Support for trials and new product development (NPD)
Calibrations & Maintenance:
- Overall responsibility of timely Calibrations and maintenance of QA instrumentation within the lab and production
- Monitor, trend, and review calibration results
- Co-ordinate and manage all external routine servicing and calibrations of equipment
Experience and Key Attributes:
- Hold an Honours Degree in Chemistry, Brewing or BioChemistry or the IBD equivalent
- Minimum 3 years’ experience of working in brewing industry/food industry with Microbiological laboratory responsibility
- Approach practical problem solving logically
- Have good attention to detail, experience of manging a financial budget
- Have an enthusiastic and committed personality
- Prior experience of managing a high performing team or being in a supervisory position
- Understanding of BRC, LEAN Skills/5s/Gemba Kaizen/SPC
- Knowledge of laboratory management and best working practices
- Experience of management of trials and small-scale research projects
