General Summary:

Unum is seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Acquisition Growth and Run team, with a focus on Mainframe technology. This role involves independently building and configuring software solutions while demonstrating deep technical expertise. The engineer will collaborate within an Agile team to ensure high-quality delivery using unit testing and continuous integration, and will apply strong problem-solving skills to design and implement business-driven solutions. Mentorship of junior engineers may be expected. This hybrid role requires at least two days per week on campus.

Job Specifications

• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science is preferred, or equivalent relevant business experience
• 4+ years experience with demonstrated success in software development or equivalent experience
• Skilled in COBOL, DB2, JCL, VSAM
• Strong Legacy Mainframe experience required (Desktop, Web UI)
• Knowledge of SCLM, IMS, CICS, Control-M a benefit
• Exposure to Topaz is a plus
• Clearly demonstrates analytical ability and critical thinking skills
• Takes a logical, analytical approach to problem solving and pays close attention to detail
• Experience with Agile Development Methodologies

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for the estimation, design, implementation, and maintenance of new and existing features for the existing portfolio of applications for a business area. Able to complete complex feature development tasks.
• Responsible for communication and collaboration with key stakeholders in the delivery of features
• Design, codes, configures, unit tests, maintains, and documents software deliverables using agreed upon standards and tools. Leads sizing and estimation activities within the agile team.
• Communicates daily with the Scrum Master or Team Lead and the Agile team on progress made and planned progress for the coming day and reports any impediments that are blocking their progress
• Participates in code reviews and sprint retrospectives; ensuring their ideas for team continuous improvement are communicated so that the overall process and team can improve sprint by sprint and readily receives feedback for self-improvement. May lead parts of same.

• Responsible for ensuring the quality of existing and new features through both manual and automated testing and use of continuous integration techniques, where practical
