About the role
The Communications Director is a central member of the Public Affairs team, helping to define the organization to the public. We are seeking an energetic, hands-on, self-directed communications professional with demonstrated experience in electoral/ issues campaigns and/or reproductive health and rights. This position will be full time, exempt, and based in Concord, NH. This position will develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan to advance the goals of the organization and its entities in New Hampshire and Vermont in close collaboration with the Vice Presidents of Public Affairs in New Hampshire and Vermont. The role will focus on envisioning and implementing a variety of public affairs and advocacy initiatives, including earned and paid media campaigns, legislative and public education, and special projects. The position will work and collaborate with organizational and electoral partners, coordinate communications across departments, and develop communications plans for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, the Planned Parenthood State Action Funds, and Planned Parenthood Votes
CHARACTERISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with the Public Affairs staff and national Planned Parenthood staff to develop strategic statewide communications plans, develop and deliver a consistent, unified message for legislative and state/federal electoral campaigns.
- Work closely with VPs of Public Affairs to oversee writing and editing of op-eds, press materials, testimony, and scripts, talking points, action alerts, email updates, and blog posts on legislative and electoral priorities.
- Work with Public Affairs teams to develop plans to elevate champions and hold policy makers accountable with both short-term and long-term goals.
- Work with and train staff, volunteers, and a speakers’ bureau to effectively communicate to the public in various mediums.
- Maintain media relations in New Hampshire and Vermont
- Formulate goals, objectives, target audiences, key messages, tactics, timeline, and evaluation of paid and earned media outreach; help identify opportunities and to report progress toward goals.
- Working with VPs of Public Affairs in NH and VT, identify opportunities to elevate PPNNE’s voice in all areas of public affairs; serve as spokesperson when needed.
- Manage independent expenditure vendor coordination for all external election communications.
- Monitor current events and election trends and keep agency staff abreast of breaking news stories and rapid response opportunities through media updates and alerts;
- identify opportunities to engage in strategic work to advance Planned Parenthood’s goals.
- Along with Public Affairs staff, identify, develop, and strengthen community alliances and strategic collaborations that promote PPNNE and PPNNE Action Fund values.
- With Public Affairs staff, develop and execute special events to advance External Affairs goals.
- Collaborate with PPFA/PPAF to stay apprised of and advance national goals.
- Manage New Hampshire Action Fund’s digital and social media presence, including digital engagement messaging, supporter emails and content for the website. Stay abreast of latest messaging and media strategies
- Assist Public Affairs staff in planning and coordinating events and activities such as volunteer trainings, lobby days, and legislator outreach events.
- Monitor and report on opposition online activity to Public Affairs staff.
- Assist with relevant data gathering for affiliate, state and national reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and 5–7 years combined experience in communications including working with members of the press core, social media engagement tactics and relevant election or issue campaign experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- experience working with independent expenditure programs/electoral strategy a strong plus. Knowledge of the electoral or political processes in Vermont or New Hampshire a plus.
- Familiarity with health care, particularly reproductive and sexual health and rights issues, preferred.
- Candidates must have a knowledge and strong commitment to progressive causes.
- Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, experience meeting deadlines, and the ability to learn quickly and manage many tasks simultaneously.
- Candidates must be highly independent and able to promote collaboration among other departments and across distances.
