 Reports To: Director of Adult Education

Position Responsibilities: 

This Adult Education Spanish Language Senior Nationality Worker Position supports non‑English speaking people and their relations with various governmental agencies, employment supports, and assistance for navigating as part of several community partnerships and grants. Under direction of the SCSD Adult Education program, this position is responsible for ensuring that refuges and immigrants have additional supports to education provided by the school district. This person will work directly with community partners, SCSD K-12 and Adult Education Staff, and help support other Nationality Workers in their ancillary roles.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Interviews persons seeking assistance to discuss their problems.
  • Assists persons, insofar as possible, in the solution of personal, family finance, and other problems.
  • Contacts various agencies, such as the Social Services Department, Health Department and clinics, Police Department, Probation Department, Courts and Hospitals, to provide necessary aid.
  • Cooperates with various agencies in dealing with non‑English speaking people.
  • Fills out and types naturalization applications, income tax returns and various other government forms.
  • Acts as interpreter for non‑English speaking people.
  • Assists in youth group work.
  • Prepares case records and periodic reports.
  • Assembles and prepares the annual budget for the Americanization League including its office and staff members.
  • Acts as a liaison with the County Legislature, the Syracuse School District and the Americanization League Board of Directors.
  • Represents the League at any public hearing or meeting speaks to audiences of various service agencies and organizations working with the League.
  • Will act as translator in any of a number of foreign languages.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

  • Good knowledge of English and the ability to communicate in the English language.
  • Good knowledge of casework methods.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to public welfare and assistance.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and interpret the foreign language required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with others.
  • Ability to speak and write in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to allay fears within the immigrant over their new setting.
  • Physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelors

Degree, or;

B) Two (2) years of work experience, or its part‑time equivalent, which must have directly involved assisting

immigrants/aliens in dealing with the economic conditions, governmental agencies and social structures encountered within the United States, or;

C) Two (2) years of permanent non‑competitive class work experience as a Nationality Worker.

Working Hours:  

This position will work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year.  This position is full-time.

Salary:

The current SCSD start salary for this position is $50,140per the Unit 9 Contract.
