About the role

Job Description

The Student Career Coach is responsible for helping high school Career & College Prep students define their career aspirations and advise them as they work to meet those aspirations and achieve their educational goals.

The Coach provides program/industry specific career and college exploration support, including prior recruiting/outplacement support; career and program-specific advising; resume, cover letter, and application development support; and job placement support via email, Zoom, and by phone. The Coach provides proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve success in school and beyond.

  • Provide one-on-one coaching, guidance, and feedback to Career & College Prep students in all aspects of their job search initiatives including identifying and reaching career goals, personal branding/marketing, resume writing, and interview skills. Support students and their families as they go through the college/career process; help students and their families aspire realistically and choose wisely in setting goals;
  • Schedule, organize and participate and provide support in student focused Career Services events, mock interviews, job fairs and seminars;
  • Provide lessons and workshops covering Job Exploration Counseling, Counseling on Post-secondary Opportunities, Workplace Readiness Training, and Instruction in Self-Advocacy;
  • Develop positive and professional rapport with clients and employers, including industry organizations and public agencies to source job openings;
  • Maintain and help students use online college and career planning resources, e.g. Naviance Family Connection Website;
  • Compile an annual profile of the students served, as well as information on grade distributions; track admissions/job placement decision and statistic and report to stakeholders appropriately; assist in interpreting data and implementing growth and improvement plans;
  • Provide various support and conduct activities related to logistics, reporting, training, communications, and processes. Participate in the planning and implementation of new initiatives;
  • Assess and troubleshoot escalated problems and apply expert understanding to resolve complex challenges of stakeholders; focus on root cause identification in order to achieve systemic and sustainable improvement. Approve and document exceptions for compliance record keeping and reporting;
  • Identify opportunities for improvement, prioritize, and recommend solutions to management. Implement approved enhancements to ensure consistency. Identify opportunities to reduce costs; analyze available data, trends, and feedback, and ensure compliance with expectations for optimal operation and goal achievement;
  • Work with appropriate Career & College Prep faculty and staff to develop and carry out career readiness curriculum appropriate for the related industries and careers in which students will engage

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Required Qualifications:   

  • Five (5) years of experience in job placement, career development or workforce initiative, or other related experience OR
  • Five (5) years of experience in college admissions, high school college and career counseling, teaching or other related experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Certificates and Licenses: None required.

  • Effective time management and organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple demands and competing deadlines.
  • Excellent communications skills (written, verbal, and listening).
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and build and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Professional work ethic with a friendly, personable attitude dedicated to the service of students.
  • Ability to identify student challenges and needs (often not vocalized), effectively communicate with students, and provide remediation or in-college assistance.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new technology systems.
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency.
  • Ability to clear required background check
