POSITION TITLE: Senior Software Engineer

POSITION LOCATION: Austin, TX or San Carlos, CA

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Software Engineer – Billing Services builds and maintains highly scalable, robust and data centric micro-services and serverless workflows to support our reimbursement cycle. As part of an engineering team, implements and improves our finance and billing applications.

ABOUT BILLING TEAM

• The billing team is a small but impactful team at Natera. We are responsible for supporting a very intricate ecosystem of microservices and serverless workflows that help our company get paid. 

• Currently, we have four developers, two more to join, and we hope one of them will be you. We have an engineering manager who is hands-on helping with the development, three QA engineers who try to automate as many integration workflows as possible, and a dedicated Product Manager who always likes when someone challenges his requirements.

• Over the years, we’ve built a bit overly complicated choreography of the services. As we move through 2023, we are working on a series of improvements in Billing workflows and redesigning interservice communication patterns for better resilience and throughput.

BILLING SERVICES TECH STACK

• AWS Serverless Architecture

• Node JS

• MySQL, PostgreSQL databases and serverless counterparts

• REST API for synchronous communications

• AWS SQS, SNS for operational async communications 

• Kafka for resilient async communications

• CI/CD using Rancher, with plan to move to Kubernetes 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with the architecture team and drive the complex system design.

• Perform code reviews and mentor the development team with best practices.

• Make key design and technical implementation on the complex system and help guide engineering vision.

• Work closely with stakeholders to define requirements, and transform into highly scalable and reliable, developer-friendly microservices APIs and serverless workflows

• Design, build and maintain highly sustainable systems to support our business applications.

• Continue improving process and procedure and evangelizing best practices.

• Be a contributing team member to the end-to-end execution of compliance initiatives.

• Be responsible for practicing technical design, developing new functionality and maintaining existing components.

• This role works with PHI on a regular basis both in paper and electronic form and have access to various technologies to access PHI (paper and electronic) in order to perform the job. 

• Must complete training relating to HIPAA/PHI privacy, General Policies and Procedure Compliance training and security training as soon as possible but not later than the first 30 days of hire.

• Must maintain a current status on Natera training requirements.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• BS degree in computer science, comparable program, or equivalent

• 7+ years of overall software development experience, preferably secure, scalable web applications with Java, and other web technologies

• Experience with object-oriented programming in Java or TypeScript, using open source framework such as Spring Framework

• Experience with cloud technologies, AWS is preferred

• Experience with serverless technologies, preferably based on AWS step function workflow and Lambda functions.

• Experience with micro-service and event-driven enterprise architecture

• Experience with software development lifecycle process from build, software configuration, change control, and release and deployment activities

• Strong relational database skills including database design and optimization

• Demonstrated teamwork skills with a solid analytical background

• Excellent organizational, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills
