State Government Affairs Specialist

The State Government Affairs Associate will serve as a subject matter expert on the State Government Affairs (SGA) team within the Advocacy Division of the ACC, closely monitoring, analyzing, and communicating pertinent state government activity, including legislation, regulation, and case law that impact ACC’s mission, programs, and member interests. Reporting to the Team Leader, State Government Affairs, this person will provide critical and timely information and make thoughtful recommendations and action plans in support of the team’s strategic objectives.

This position is based in Washington, DC where we have a hybrid work environment (two days per week in the office).

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Create and execute efficient processes for monitoring and analyzing pertinent state government activity, including legislation, regulation, and case law.

• Analyze a wide range of proposed state legislation, regulation, and policies and work directly with relevant staff and state/chapter leaders to advise and help develop position or course of action for chapter.

• Serve as the primary point of contact for interactions with state government officials and agencies.

• Proactively engage with policymakers to educate them about ACC, address concerns, and advocate for policy solutions.

• Lead legislative tracking for the state government affairs team. monitoring bills, regulations, and policy proposals related to healthcare.

• Work directly with ACC governors, chapter executives, ACC chapter/BOG staff, and other stakeholders to advance and/or defend policy positions.

• Build, enhance, and evaluate chapter advocacy engagement and provide educational and communication materials for chapters.

• Develop and draft letters/comments, testimony, issue briefs, and other written policy instruments.

• Collaborate internally, educating SGA team, Advocacy team, members, and other stakeholders on key state government affairs issues and proposed legislation.

• Serve as peer lead and mentor to other members of the SGA team, and help to onboard and train new members of the team.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience with state government affairs, preferably with a medical society.

• Experience with analyzing and persuasively communicating complex concepts to policymakers and business leaders.

• Strong political acumen; strong ability to grasp complex issues; collaborative approach.

• Thorough understanding of how state-level government relations works, and an ability to be effective with members of both political parties.

• Demonstrated success in working with member volunteer leaders and engaging members in advocacy efforts.

• Strong oral and written communication skills.
