The Senior Accountant position is responsible for supporting the financial operations unit of the University’s central finance office. Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting, the Senior Accountant will have primary responsibilities for Financial Reporting and Accounting. Hybrid and in-person work options are available.
The Senior Accountant position requires experience in accounting and an understanding of standard accounting principles, experience reconciling; balancing and maintaining accounting records; working in a customer-oriented environment with a focus on helping customers achieve their operational objectives. The position will be required to develop proficiency with existing University policies and procedures relating to endowments and accounts receivable.
Responsibilities and Duties:
This position will assist the Director of Financial Reporting with:
- Supports preparation of quarterly and year-end financial statements. Will actively work with other departments, and internal/external auditors.
- Supports in preparing external reports of financial data (IPEDS, NACUBO, etc.).
- Support in the creation, review, and documentation of financial accounting and operations policies and procedures.
- Aid in coordination of accounting matters with other departments, locations, and divisions including reconciliations and compliance related control measures when appropriate.
- Assist with analysis and implementation of new GASB Standards including formal documentation in an accounting memorandum.
- Perform analysis of financial transactions, ensuring adherence with federal, state, and University standards and regulations and document associated business processes.
- Review and verify the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications, including making journal entries.
- Analyze financial reports and records, making studies or recommendations on accounting reserves, assets and expenditures for the Financial Accounting and Reporting group.
- Work with other areas of Finance as needed, that include, but are not limited to cost accounting, sponsored research, leases and tax, and others.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work with a complex accounting system and spreadsheet software.
- Ability to perform detailed work with numerical data and to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately; ability to prepare financial reports and handle one or more aspects of fiscal operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of professional individuals.
- Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in making decisions related to accounting entries and in resolving customer inquiries.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Lease accounting and month-end close process experience
- Exceptional organization and execution/follow-up skills
- Ability to see big picture and know when/how to dive deeper into details
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to effectively work with many different teams across the organization

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree (Business or Accounting preferred).
- Preferred Education: Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting
- Required Experience: 5 years of accounting work experience.
- Preferred Qualification: Active CPA license
- Required Computer Applications: Microsoft Excel
- Preferred Computer Applications: Workday
The Senior Accountant will report to the Director of Financial Reporting.
