About the role

Description

 Veterinary technicians (vet techs) work with veterinarians to provide nursing care for animals. Their responsibilities can include: 

  • Animal care Observing animal behavior and condition, providing first aid, grooming, and restraining animals for exams and procedures 
  • Diagnostic testing Taking x-rays, collecting samples for laboratory tests, and performing other diagnostic imaging 
  • Preparing for surgery Preparing animals and instruments, placing IV catheters, and assisting with surgical procedures 
  • Administering medication Administering anesthesia, medications, and vaccines prescribed by a veterinarian 
  • Monitoring patients Monitoring anesthetized animals and hospitalized pets, and taking and recording patient vital signs 
  • Educating pet owners Gathering information from pet owners about their pet's condition, and educating them on proper health and nutrition 
  • Administrative tasks Creating and maintaining animal case histories, and updating patient medical records 

Vet techs may also be responsible for cleaning and sterilizing surgical equipment and instruments and picking up trash or feces. They should maintain a professional appearance and be willing to stay late or through breaks to assist with emergencies.

Requirements

 

  • Scientific aptitude: Understand animal anatomy and physiology 
  • Observation skills: Look for subtle clues in animal behavior 
  • Medical knowledge: Understand medical procedures, biology, medicine, and dentistry 
  • Compassion: Respond to animals with kindness and communicate sensitively with pet owners 
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with veterinarians and owners 
  • Detail-oriented: Observe and report details in operating rooms and when examining animals 
  • Stamina: Spend a lot of time on your feet and moving animals
