Job Purpose: The Assistant Academic Counselor supports the Academic Counselor in serving secondary students in grades 7-12. This role partners with faculty, administrators, and families to guide students in course selection, goal setting, academic achievement, and preparation for college or career pathways. This individual serves students and families with excellence, compassion, and integrity, supporting both academic success and spiritual development while ensuring smooth academic guidance operations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Planning & Student Support


Assist students in grades 7-12 with course selection and long-term academic planning


Monitor student academic progress and identify students in need of additional support


Process transcript requests and ensure accuracy through audits and graduation requirement checks


Assist with student scheduling, including course entry, adjustments, and distribution of schedules


Support dual credit students with scheduling and grade entry each semester


Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop academic intervention plans


Support students transitioning from junior high to high school


Maintain accurate academic records and documentation in accordance with school policies

College & Career Readiness (High School Focus)


Support students and families in understanding graduation requirements


Assist with college and career exploration resources and programming


Provide guidance on college applications, timelines, and admissions requirements


Help coordinate standardized testing information (PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc.)


Assist with scholarship and financial aid information distribution


Support transcript requests and academic documentation as needed

Junior High Academic Development


Help junior high students develop study skills, organization strategies, and time management habits


Provide age-appropriate academic goal-setting guidance


Assist with transition preparation for high school course pathways

Family & Faculty Collaboration


Communicate regularly with parents regarding academic planning and student progress


Participate in parent-teacher conferences as needed


Partner with faculty to identify trends in student performance and academic needs


Provide academic resource recommendations to families

Program Development & Administration


Assist in developing and implementing school-wide academic counseling programs for grades 7-12


Support orientation events, course registration processes, and academic workshops


Maintain counseling materials, college and career resources, and student files


Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events

Spiritual Integration


Encourage students to view their academic growth as part of their spiritual development


Model Christian character and support the school’s mission and statement of faith


Participate in school chapel and faith-based initiatives as appropriate

Compliance & Confidentiality


Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with school policies and applicable regulations


Follow established procedures for data handling and communication

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:


Bachelor’s degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology, or related field


Experience working with junior high and/or high school students


Strong organizational, communication, and data management skills


Demonstrated commitment to Christian faith and alignment with the school’s mission and statement of faith
