The TRIO Student Success Specialist (SSS) helps students develop learning strategies and skills to succeed in education. This position provides individualized support to TRIO/SSS participants on our campuses and assists students in acquiring subject-specific knowledge and skills sets. Other essential elements include marketing of TRIO/SSS services, and continuous improvement through assessment data.
Principle Responsibilities
1. Assist TRIO/SSS students in identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials.
- Provide individualized support and success coaching for newly admitted participants and participants experiencing academic difficulty.
- Develop individual success plans for students that include identifying their skills, strengths, and interests and clarifying their educational, career, and life goals.
- Assist TRIO/SSS participants in developing time management and organization skills and motivate participants to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success.
- Coordinate orientation, coaching interventions, and retention efforts with academic advising partner, as needed.
- Collaborate with faculty, Tutoring, Accessibility Services, Basic Needs Coordinator, Social Emotional Referrals, and other services to support students in obtaining their academic goals.
- Provide tutoring services to participants as needed.
2. Develop and implement intervention strategies designed to improve academic success and persistence of TRIO/SSS participants.
- Organize and lead student success workshops/seminars/study groups.
- Assist TRIO/SSS participants with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in education and career planning.
- Refer participants to appropriate academic personnel and support resources and collaborate with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred.
- Attend Tutoring Services and TRIO team meetings as needed.
- Build collaborative relationships with the Tutoring Center, Advisors, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's Office to support the whole student better.
- Co-sponsor of Club TRIO; helps organize events and activities that focus on SSS project goals.
3. Maintain accurate departmental and student records.
- Track numbers of students served, academic progress, and schedules that help with future planning and staffing.
- Monitor student progress towards goals.
- Update student records to reflect coaching, training, and meetings.
- Maintain records of mini-session study skill offering.
4. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree is in Math, Science, Business, Education, Social Work or related field.
- Experience supporting students in the areas of effective self-advocacy, organization, time management and study skills.
- Tutoring
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with experience in using Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to travel between campuses and other work-related events.
Preferred Qualification
- Master's Degree in a related field.
- Understanding of the mission of a Community and Technical College.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Bilingual/multilingual fluent in Spanish, Somali, Karen, Amuak, Nuer, or other languages that reflect our student body, workforce and communities.
- Demonstrated experience working with multicultural and underserved populations.
Other Requirements
This position requires successful completion of employment references and a driver's license background check.
