Position Summary: The Medical Technologist performs routine and complex procedures in blood bank, chemistry, hematology, serology, microbiology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. A Medical Technologist obtains and receives specimens, performs clinical laboratory tests by stan¬dardized procedures, understands method principles, performs quality con¬trol, performs preventative maintenance, and interprets results as to accura¬cy, acceptability, and critical limits. The Medical Technologist works independently, organizes work to meet established deadlines, records all data obtained, and maintains job competence. The job also involves effec¬tive communication and interpersonal skills. The Medical Technologist will assume the responsibility of the supervisor in their absence. A Medical Technologist with HEW or ASCP certification and 3 years of experience, meets the CLIA definition for General Supervisor, and functions in this role for the following tasks as assigned: review of daily work, review of maintenance logs, review of quality control, annual review of procedure manuals, and initial review of proficiency testing. Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: 1. Performs routine and specialized clinical laboratory procedures accord¬ing to established standards and procedures, using proper technique and equipment in the performance of duties to assure biological and physical safety and accuracy. Work must be performed accurately in the judgement of the supervisor and with no more than two documented major errors per evaluation year. a. Follows written procedures to independently perform routine diagnos¬tic testing which may include, but is not limited to, the following: b. Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Clinical Microsco¬py, Immunohematology, Donor Collection and Processing, Therapeutic Drug monitoring, Microbiology, Serology. c. Plans, organizes and prioritizes work duties to complete tasks within normal work hours and utilize time efficiently. d. Consistently notifies supervisor or charge technologist of all unusual or significantly abnormal results. e. Communicates specimen requirements, normal ranges, and advanced technical information to other personnel. f. Assumes responsibility for the departmental inventory as assigned by the supervisor, to maintain supplies at an adequate level. As¬sists the supervisor identifying appropriate re-order levels, and inventory levels. g. Consistently phones results to physicians or nursing staff, and/or communicates alarm values appropriately. h. Checks questionable orders with supervisor, nursing unit or physi¬cian. Recommends appropriate tests/profiles where applicable. 2. Routinely performs quality control and maintenance procedures as a part of normal workflow. a. Performs and documents QC tests on all instruments at the appropri¬ate times. Analyzes QC data and identifies significant problems with quality control and equipment as they arise with no more than two major, documented errors per evaluation year. b. Readily and willingly assists staff and physicians in problem solving as the need arises. Consistently provides technical assis¬tance to those requesting or requiring it as observed by the super¬visor. c. Performs advanced troubleshooting, and corrective maintenance proce-dures independently. Accurately identifies problems encountered in routine workflow, and takes appropriate action to resolve them. Reports these problems to the appropriate supervisor or charge technologist. Performance is determined by supervisory observation and review and documentation on instrument logs. 3. Maintains and increases professional knowledge. This aspect of perfor¬mance will be assessed by supervisory review. a. Assumes responsibility for own competency and continuing education by participating in continuing education, as evidenced by CED docu-mentation record. b. Works in conjunction with the supervisor to develop new procedures, testing methods and policies as assigned. Writes procedures accord¬ing to NCCLS standards. c. Participates in the education of new employees by demonstration, presentation of theoretical material and classroom presentation. d. In the absence of the supervisor, provides direction, leadership, and technical expertise to other technicians and technologists. 4. Properly collects and prepares specimens with efficiency and accuracy for subsequent testing to ensure the accurate and timely reporting of results used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The following assignments are monitored by the supervisor with input from the phleboto¬my supervisor, and must have no more than 2 documented major errors per evaluation year. a.
