Job Description

As a software engineer on the Bank Accounts API team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the services and infrastructure that control the flow of billions of dollars in and out of Square. You will be deeply involved in the technical details of building highly available and reliable services, while also working with product teams to enable Square to rapidly build new capabilities for our merchants and buyers all over the world.

You will:

• Build our services in the cloud, leveraging new cloud technology to be used by the rest of the organization
• Design and implement high-volume, low-latency, distributed data access systems, making thoughtful tradeoffs between consistency and availability when both are not possible
• Abstract away legacy APIs of outdated data models to build our latest flexible platform to serve all our clients needs
• Build systems that manage customers’ sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance
• Work cross-functionally with our product, business, and finance teams to develop Square’s global payments strategy
• Design fault tolerant systems so the team can move fast without negatively impacting customers

Qualifications

You Have:

• Innate curiosity and a desire to be responsible for all aspects of reliably moving billions of dollars in a highly focused and highly functional team
• Understanding and curiosity in creating highly available, scalable, low-latency, global systems
• Interest in changing the payments landscape in the US and globally
• Strong attention to detail.  Ability to pick out the small things that may have large impacts
• 4+ years of software development experience in Java, Python or similar

Preferred experience but not required:

• Java
• Kotlin
• AWS DynamoDB, SQS, Lambda, Step Functions,Kafka
• MySQL, Guice, Guava, Protocol Buffers, jOOQ

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $135,200 - USD $202,800
Zone B: USD $128,500 - USD $192,700
Zone C: USD $121,700 - USD $182,500
Zone D: USD $115,000 - USD $172,400
