The mission of the Center for Child and Family Policy is to contribute to solutions to important problems affecting today’s children and families, through an integrated system of scientific research, debate and dissemination, public service, and teaching. The Center emphasizes the bridge from basic research to policy and practice.

 

Occupational Summary

Participate in a variety of duties data collection duties for a research study in elementary schools with ESL and classroom teachers. Responsibilities include conducting classroom observations by zoom and may include supporting teachers in administering student assessments. Must be able to work during school hours which are typically 7:30 to 3:00 PM. This is a part-time position with four waves of data collection during the school year through June 2025.

 

The Center for Child and Family Policy received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) for an efficacy trial of a teacher professional development (PD) program in elementary schools in North Carolina. This comprehensive teacher PD program provides English as a second language (ESL) and classroom teachers with a framework for collaboration, skills for implementing high-impact instructional strategies, and approaches for incorporating families’ cultural wealth into the classroom. The PD program is based on research supporting teacher PD and includes four days of workshops, ongoing virtual implementation coaching, and weekly collaboration sessions between the ESL and classroom teachers. Work to be Performed
 

This is a part-time position with concentrated work in the schools for about 25 hours per week for 4 windows of data collection throughout the school year.  Each data collection window will take about 5-6 weeks.  Some weeks will not have any scheduled work.

 

• Conduct classroom observations by zoom using a structured observation protocol.
• May include supporting teachers’ administration of student assessments.
• Participate in coordinating data collection activities and schedules with other members of the research team.
• Enter observation data into an online portal.
• Participate in biweekly research team meetings.
• Perform a variety of routine and complex clerical duties as well as research and data processing duties to assist investigators in collecting and managing research data.
• Adapt to changing data collection procedures due to remote teaching and learning and other modifications to the study.
