Job Description Summary

The Test Apprenticeship Program combines both academic studies and on-the-job training to develop the fundamentals required to become a skilled Test Operator. An operator will test Heavy Duty Gas Turbines at the test facility and participate in all aspects of maintenance, operation, and testing at the facility.

Applicants must hold an Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Electronics or similar degree or be currently enrolled in a local community college pursuing the degree. 

Job Description

Must work full time while attending technical school and successfully pass academic requirements or have previously passed required program academics.  Tuition and fees will be paid by any available grants, scholarship funding and GE (via tuition reimbursement benefits). Primary responsibility of the apprentice will be to learn all the diverse areas of Test.  By the end of the program, the employee will be able to: 


Test Heavy Duty Gas Turbines 

  • The Test facility is responsible for running new-make Heavy Duty Gas Turbines produced in Greenville, SC.  This includes installation in dedicated test cells, monitoring of the process systems during operation, and verifying overall unit performance and quality to stringent standards.  

  • Perform simple to complex troubleshooting and repair on a variety of heavy-duty gas turbine equipment and balance of plant equipment, both electrical and mechanical systems. 

  • Conduct gas turbine test operations as scheduled, and assure test planning, test methods, quality procedures and safety procedures are followed. 

  • Identify, report and correct defects and malfunctions on heavy-duty gas turbines and facility equipment.  

  • Provide technical instruction and work to contract support staff. 

  • Perform and/or assist in laser alignment of high-speed shafts. 

General Operations 

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance of electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems. 

  • Demonstrate ownership and participate with the teams in Safety, Quality, Continuous Improvement, and Lean efforts. 

  • Perform gage calibration on instruments. 

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and perform as part of a team. 

  • Learn basic machine and system operation for a variety of equipment to assist in troubleshooting. 

  • Accurately utilize various types of precision measuring and test equipment associated with the evaluation of function and repair to heavy-duty gas turbines and facility equipment. 

  • Operate various material-moving equipment (e.g., forklifts, straddle-hoist and jib/gantry cranes). 

  • Safely and effectively utilize various hand tools, shop equipment, fixtures, and tooling. 

  • Perform any other assigned duties as required.
