Job Summary
As a principal software engineer for DRS Naval Electronics, you will apply your technical and development experience to lead the execution of the software architecture and design-related development of tactical radar embedded software and subsystems in our portfolio of US Navy electronics infrastructure solutions. The lead software engineer will provide subject matter expertise to client programs for embedded software in radar components and lead the software development operations as part of the engineering team. This role includes software task leadership to solve software issues during design, test, transition to production, and formal deliveries. Job focus areas include leading software engineering activities in software architecture applied to software design, development, testing, and modification of sub-systems or systems and the sustainment of these systems through the product life cycle.
Job Responsibilities
In this role, the candidate will be responsible for driving technology and completion of assigned technical solutions, efficient execution, and task completion on time and within budget. Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of radar products, systems or sub-systems. Ability to independently lead a technical team and mentor and coach other engineers are key capabilities needed for this role. Primary and essential accountabilities include, but not limited to, the following:
- Provide SME guidance embedded software activities and related documentation such as systems concept of operations, system design, implementation plans, and operational procedures
- Interface with internal and external stakeholders and customers on software engineering topics including but not limited to; interacting with users to define software requirements and/or necessary modifications and reviewing customer specifications and requirements and developing designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable
- Developing and integrating embedded software using C and C++ or related languages for advanced Surface-to-Surface or Surface-to-Air radar systems
- Design, development, analysis, testing, integration (on hardware) and debugging of computer software applications and/or systems
- Software applications and systems may include Image and Signal Processing, Real-time, Firmware, Database Design, Operating Systems, Operator/Machine Interface, networking and communications, or others including working with previously written code to make bug fixes and improvements
- Development and deployment performed on Red Hat Linux OS with Red Hawk real-time extensions
- Perform unit and system-level analysis to measure performance, cost, schedule, and risk trade-offs
- Author, derive, allocate and trace requirements for new or improved software products or services
- Use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments
- Investigate solutions to software product or process problems
- Support software qualification efforts, development of test software and qualification plans, test activities, and failure analysis; including resolving field performance issues via failure analysis, debugging and change management

- Develop and present software-related material to support internal and external project reviews
- Scope and estimate software effort and review software design changes for engineering change proposals and engineering change orders.
- Create and process documentation updates including generation and maintenance of Software Development Plans (SDPs), Software Requirements Documents (SRDs), Software Design Descriptions (SDDs), etc.
- Apply parametric software estimation models to support labor bids and author software-related content in new business proposals.
- Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments and software build deliveries.
- Provide technical knowledge, assistance, and mentoring to other engineers and support personnel
- Specify and evaluate software related supplier components, subsystems, and services.
- Coordinate and oversee the following Administration and SCM activities:
- Maintain and support Software Configuration Management (SCM) tools including ClearCase, Git, Jenkins or others.
- Maintain and support the software development environment using virtual machines, hypervisors and test equipment.
