Technician Environmental Systems

Under supervision of a supervisory official in a state department or agency, takes the lead in the operation, maintenance, adjustment, repair, and servicing for a complex or group of buildings with not less than 1,000 combined tons of cooling and 1,000 boiler horse power, air conditioning and heating system units, and auxiliary equipment, or where heating is supplied by a cogeneration plant, or where boiler operation is not applicable; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Takes the lead in the operation, maintenance, adjustment of boilers, motors, compressors, pumps, rooftop units, auxiliary equipment, and environmental controls used in heating systems, air conditioning systems, and complete climate control.
  • Operates, maintains, repairs, and services motors, pumps, blowers, air handlers, exhausts, air and refrigeration compressors, and related electric or solid state controls and wiring in rooftop units and boilers and chilling systems.
  • Supervises scheduled preventive maintenance such as greasing, oiling, belt changes, alignments, air flow, water flow, filter changes, control adjustments, and refrigerant charging of any nontoxic refrigerating, air conditioning, or climate control system in rooftop, boilers, and chilling systems.
  • Orders, receives, stores, safeguards, records, and supervises the proper use of equipment, materials, supplies, and tools.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Oversees on-the-job safety.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, and adjustment of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, auxiliary equipment, related electric or solid state controls and wiring, and the conditioning of air and water in roof mounted units, boilers, and chilling systems, or other type of heating/refrigeration system.

 LICENSE:

  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
  • Appointee may be required to possess an Operating Engineers License of the appropriate grade and type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.
  •  Appointees will be required to possess a valid Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification of the appropriate level, commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued under the  authority of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the types of boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary equipment used in heating and air conditioning systems in rooftop units or other units and their proper use, care, adjustment, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of problems, procedures, methods, operating characteristics, controls, adjustments, repairs, safety devices, water flow, air flow, electrical diagnosis, and repairs common to heating systems, air conditioning systems, and nontoxic refrigeration systems in both boilers, chillers, and rooftop units.
  • Knowledge of methods used to conduct periodic comprehensive tests of fuel consumption, energy consumption, pressure, air flow requirements, water flow requirements, and temperature using common testing or metering devices.
  • Ability to analyze heating systems, air conditioning systems, and climate control systems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to provide work assignments and instructions to subordinates.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to inspect, check, and make proper use of safety devices, measures, regulations, and supervise the use of the same.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and supervise the proper use of materials, supplies, and tools.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
