Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional position serving under the direct supervision of the Epidemiology and Evaluation Section Administrator within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention. This is a highly responsible position that performs epidemiologic and evaluation functions for the entire bureau with specific emphasis on Asthma; Heart Disease and Stroke; Diabetes; Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity; Healthy Communities of Florida; and Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant initiatives. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Analyzing various data sets (including vital statistics, emergency and hospital discharge, and population-based surveys such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to describe the burden of chronic disease in Florida.
- Developing data products and reports to communicate analysis findings to inform stakeholders and to guide statewide chronic disease prevention efforts.
- Completing data analysis activities and requests in a timely manner.
- Meeting regularly with bureau programs to develop analysis plans based on programmatic needs.
- Identifying data sources and measures of success.
- Providing guidance to other team members on epidemiologic approaches and analyses.
- Assisting with grant applications and submission of reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with statewide chronic disease prevention partners, bureau wide programs, county health department staff, and individuals who have an impact on chronic disease prevention efforts.
- Participating in Surveillance and Epidemiology Section’s meetings and assisting team members with developing, implementing, and tracking bureau surveillance and evaluation plans.
- Participating in and attending pertinent educational opportunities to further enhance personal and professional development.
- Participating in epidemiologic studies conducted by the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention and/or its partners.
- Participating in national chronic disease epidemiology and evaluation workgroups (e.g., Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists [CSTE], National Association of Chronic Disease Directors [NACCD], etc.).
- Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required by Bureau program activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expertise required includes experience with data analysis, survey data and health system data, report writing, public speaking, knowledge of epidemiologic and statistical methods, data analysis using statistical software such as SQL and SAS, Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping skills, familiarity with epidemiologic and research methodology, and ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
