MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

High School education.

Experience:


Licensure/ Registration/ Certification:

Registered as a pharmacy technician with the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy and have current certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, National Health Career Association.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations.

  • Knowledge of sterile technique and ability to work in laminar flow hood.

  • Basic mathematical skills to compute proportions and compounds.

  • Ability to type/keyboard.

  • Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak English.

  • Knowledge of brand and generic drug names.

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to prescriptions.

  • Knowledge of computerized pharmacy record keeping and credit procedures.

  • Knowledge of hospital or retail pharmacy’s procedures for filling, dispensing and billing prescriptions.

  • Ability to use computers, automated dispensing machines, auto-mix and micro-mix equipment, medication safety system, medication packager, controlled substances safe, prescription scanning/filling/checking system.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Completion of an accredited program for pharmacy technicians or completion of MN Board of Pharmacy Technician training requirements if registered as a pharmacy technician after January 1st, 2013.

Experience:

Six (6) months of related experience in a hospital, community or institutional pharmacy preferred.





POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:


Works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Lead Pharmacist, Pharmacist, Certified Lead Pharmacy Technician to assist in the provision of pharmaceuticals to customers of the pharmacy, and perform related duties as assigned.


Major Job Duties and Tasks

1.

Provides customer service to internal and external customers.

  1. Assures that all customers of the pharmacy are provided with high quality service in a timely fashion, whether in person, on the phone or by other means according to standards established by the department. Directs customers to the Pharmacist as necessary.

  2. Assures that the phone is answered according to department standards.

  3. Uses department scripting according to department standards.

2.

Accurately fills and labels medication orders in the area of assignment (IP, OP, SPA, etc.)

  1. Maintains and fills automated compounding equipment following established procedures of the department.

  2. Performs calculations to gather and measure ingredients accurately for compounds and other preparations.

  3. Prepares batch sterile compounded products and labels appropriately.

  4. Prepares chemotherapy agents following established procedures.

  5. Prepares sterile products in accordance with standardized aseptic technique.

  6. Processes medication returns and interdepartmental transfers of medication.

3.

Assists with inventory management to assure on-hand counts are correct in the computer systems, checks for outdated product on the shelf and assures that adequate supplies are on hand to facilitate work.

  1. Checks in medication orders from suppliers and rotates stock.

  2. Place order to wholesaler for medication stock.

Maintains records in compliance with legal requirements, department policies and procedures.
