The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking an Electrical and Electronic System Specialist 3 to support the safe and reliable operation of the I-90 Tunnels, Seattle Convention Center lid, and SR 520 Montlake and Portage Bay lids. This position performs advanced maintenance, diagnosis, installation, repair, and testing of complex electronic, fiber-optic, fire life safety, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment. The incumbent plays a critical role in ensuring tunnel and lid systems remain fully functional, operationally safe, and responsive during emergencies such as fires, collisions, and other roadway incidents. This position directly supports WSDOT’s mission and strategic plan through a strong commitment to safety, quality, stewardship, and system resilience. What to Expect

The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., working four 10-hour shifts per week. This position may require weekend, holiday, night, alternate, and emergency shift work in response to operational needs and emergency situations. The incumbent must be able to report to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call-out and participate in a rotational 24-hour standby schedule. Occasional call-backs may be required. Employees are expected to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions, independently or as part of a team, and may be required to work extended hours as needed.
 

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the EESS3 will:

  • Maintain, repair, install, and troubleshoot Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), fire life safety systems, fiber-optic networks, and electronic equipment within tunnels, lids, and associated pump stations. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance and testing on complex electrical, communication, PLC/SCADA, and server-based control systems using specialized diagnostic and testing equipment. 
  • Diagnose and repair roadway and building fire alarm systems, security systems, environmental monitoring devices, emergency communication systems, and lighting controls. 
  • Inspect, test, and monitor fire detection systems, automated signs and gates, Variable Message Systems (VMS), sensors, and related infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable operations. 
  • Respond to alarms, equipment failures, emergency incidents, and third-party damages by securing affected areas, restoring systems, documenting damages, and supporting emergency operations. 
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily work activities, maintain inventory and computerized maintenance records, and support compliance with safety regulations, WSDOT standards, NEC, and MUTCD requirements. 
  • Implement traffic control operations for lane, shoulder, roadway, and tunnel closures, including flagging operations and operation of attenuator and support vehicles. 
  • Train and support personnel on safe equipment operation, maintenance procedures, safety practices, and Best Management Practices (BMPs), while maintaining WSDOT facilities, equipment, and work areas.
