Job Description

LF Energy is an open source foundation focused on the power systems sector, hosted within The Linux Foundation. LF Energy provides a neutral, collaborative community to build the shared digital investments that will transform the world’s relationship to energy.

We are seeking an Executive Director to help us execute on our purpose alongside our member organizations, working groups and community leaders. You’ll work side-by-side with these stakeholders, as well as the program management team and other Linux Foundation teams to meaningfully and measurably execute on goals, and cultivate new and existing relationships to their fullest potential. 

As the executive leader for the LF Energy Foundation, you’ll work with staff, governing board members, and the larger community to map the priorities and goals of the foundation to an effective deployment of the financial and talent contributions. Your work will drive improved communication and efficiency across the organization’s many working groups, projects, member organizations, and strategic partnerships.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership
    • Create & Drive Governing Board meetings including strategy discussions, personnel management.
    • Collaborating with Governing Board members and other stakeholders to determine, document, and prioritize business strategies.
    • Leading the OKR development process for the organization and determining key performance indicators and how to measure performance.
    • Overseeing strategic initiatives from ideation to implementation.
    • Providing oversight for special projects and initiatives.
    • Planning, coordinating and leading staff meetings and workshops
    • Own the creation and approval of yearly budgets and re-forecasts based on strategic guidance from the board.
    • Single point of escalation for any issue covering the project (within board, or community). 
    • Interface to LF Services planning including Legal, finance, G&A, etc.
  • Business Development
    • New Member pipeline creation, management and closure. 
    • Support pipeline reporting to the Governing Board.
    • Responding to inquiries, maintaining open lines of communication with current and potential member organizations and strategic partners.
    • Initiate first call for new members in the pipeline.
    • Oversight of Sales Campaigns.
    • Maintain the Project Pitch Deck with input from Marketing, TSC and Board.
  • Thought Leadership
    • Acting as a thought leader for new ideas and initiatives.
    • Work with LF Energy staff and community members to summarize and report out on the activities and impact of the organization in a way suitable for both internal and external audiences.
    • Elevate project within LF (eg Annual Report, LFX tools etc) and outside LF through keynotes, presentations.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills: you write down action items, follow up with meeting notes, and have a penchant for documenting process and goals.
  • Strong cooperative leadership skills: you understand the nuances required when working with volunteers, and that our mandate is to serve.
  • Strong problem solving skills: you aren’t afraid of a little ambiguity, a hard problem, or a sticky situation and work productively to resolve issues.
  • Operational focus: you plan, coordinate, get sign-off, prep documents, and set agendas to help keep everyone in alignment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, operate, and clearly communicate in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Experience working with open source communities: you understand the open source ecosystem and the challenges and opportunities it faces.
  • Deep experience in the Energy sector; preferred experience working with regulatory agencies.
  • Strong speaking and writing skills, experience being a spokesperson for a global organization is a plus.
