About the role

This position is responsible for inspecting residential and commercial structures, preparing cost estimates for exterior and interior repair, and voluntary demolition. The incumbent also applies the rules of City codes, state statutes, and the U.S. Constitution to applicable local nuisance, housing and unsafe structure ordinances. This role is supervised by the Property Maintenance Unit’s field supervisor, who evaluates the work based on the results achieved. Position Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Primary duties include:

  • Conducting on-site inspections of residential and commercial properties to determine deficiencies and needed repairs in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal codes/regulations.
  • Prepares itemized cost estimates to determine repair costs and replacement value of structures.
  • Prepare necessary forms and documents for each project.
  • Responds to public, individual, and contractor inquiries with appropriate information or assistance to resolve problems.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • The ability to problem-solve and exercise sound judgment
  • An aptitude for technology or a willingness to learn
  • The ability to work independently or as a team

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience is required.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must be able to obtain the ICC International Property Maintenance Code Certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Certification with Kansas Association of Code Enforcement required within twenty-four (24) months of hire.
  • Experience with Microsoft windows software operating system for computers to include Word, Excel and Outlook is required.
  • Experience in housing construction or remodeling field (single-family, two-family or multi-family) demonstrating a broad knowledge of the construction trades is preferred.

Entry rate of pay is $21.00 per hour
