As a Medical Necessity Writer, you’ll help ensure patients receive the right level of home health care. You’ll review medical records, research clinical data, and write persuasive letters to support care decisions—whether it’s starting, continuing, or increasing services.  
Analyze patient medical records, treatment plans, and assessments 
Research journal articles related to covered diagnoses and exposures 
Write clear, concise letters of medical necessity 
Ensure all relevant covered conditions are included 
Collaborate with healthcare providers and team members 
Monitor patient progress and assess care needs 
Think creatively to justify continuation or increase in care 
Submit timely renewal/increase requests with supporting documentation 
Maintain organized records of research, correspondence, and documentation 
Have strong writing and analytical skills 
Are detail-oriented and organized 
Can communicate clearly and professionally 
Enjoy working independently and collaboratively 
 
Job requirements:  
Healthcare experience preferred 
Experience with MS Office products required 
Key competencies include communication both written and verbal, analytical thinking, detail oriented, teamwork and organization 

Responsibilities

  • Create medical and legal documentation with accuracy and a focus on fostering positive relationships with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
  • Efficiently manage a high volume of claims on a weekly basis.
  • Provide continuous support by reviewing patient records and identifying additional health issues to maximize benefits.
  • Maintain high standards to build and sustain patient trust.
  • Clearly communicate to ensure that patient expectations are aligned with what is realistically achievable.
  • Apply technical skills to secure prompt and successful claim approvals.
  • Foster patient satisfaction and engagement through effective communication and consistent support.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Biology, Nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting is required, preferably in coordinating and managing patient documentation, medical writing, medical terminology, or in a healthcare administration role.
  • Familiarity with healthcare programs and benefits, particularly the Department of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) program, is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software is required.
