Summary

The Montgomery County Department of Parks—Southern Parks Division is seeking an experienced, dynamic, highly organized, and professional Athletic Fields Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader-CDL to join the Meadowbrook Maintenance Facility in Chevy Chase, MD.

Under general supervision, leads daily maintenance and operations of athletic fields and park facilities. Oversees staff, schedules work, and ensures safe, high-quality field conditions through turf care, field prep, repairs, and equipment use. Manages projects, supplies, and team performance. Requires strong grounds maintenance knowledge and the ability to obtain a Class A-Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12-months of hire. This position offers training and growth opportunities. The work schedule is mainly days, but may include nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.

The Southern Parks Division supports both local and regional recreation across some of the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. The division maintains over 200 parks and operates a large fleet of equipment to keep park facilities, athletic fields, trails, and playgrounds safe, functional, and ready for daily use

Examples of duties

Athletic Field Maintenance Leadership

  • Lead daily field maintenance to ensure safe, game-ready conditions 
  • Oversee setup, repair, turf care, and field improvements 
  • Monitor and resolve turf, drainage, and wear issues 
  • Supervise staff and ensure safety and quality standards 
  • Support parks and facility operations as needed

Equipment & Vehicle Operation

  • Operate and maintain field equipment (tractors, mowers, aerators)
  • Transport equipment using trucks, trailers, and CDL vehicles
  • Perform hauling and seasonal tasks (e.g., snow removal)

Administrative Tasks

  • Manage staffing, schedules, and daily work assignments 
  • Track work orders, logs, and field activities in EAM systems 
  • Communicate via email and maintain accurate records 
  • Train staff and complete required certifications

Working Conditions

  • Primarily works outside. 
  • May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. 
  • Occasionally exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy). 
  • Some pressure to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds

Additional Information

  • Class-A CDL required within 12 months 
  • Salary based on experience and qualifications

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and safety standards 
  • Playground Safety certification preferred
