Job Description

The Department of Art + Design at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites applications for a Director of University Galleries position at the faculty rank as a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenure on arrival Associate Professor to begin fall 2024. Faculty rank and tenure status will be determined upon qualifications and tenure on arrival pending approval from the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. The incoming Director will need to demonstrate a strong record of successful grant writing, fundraising experience, expertise in curatorial activities, and relevant administrative experience. The Galleries Director will report to the Director of the School of Arts, Media, & Communication and teach up to 2 courses per academic year.

The Galleries Director performs a vital role within the Department of Art + Design, the campus, and the greater South Texas community. Through exhibitions, outreach, and events, the Gallery Director is a public-facing position that does a great deal toward bringing the public in contact with students, faculty, and staff. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, represent the department and the arts within the university and broader community, advocate for the needs of the galleries, and display the highest ethical values and principles in professional endeavors.

The Responsibilities of the Gallery Director include, but are not limited to:

• Serves as chief curator, overseeing curatorial research, event programming, and exhibition planning from development to implementation.

• Develops programming in collaboration and consultation with departmental faculty and staff.

• Reviews the University Galleries Mission Statement regularly with Art + Design faculty to ensure it is current and meets student, department, university, and community needs.

• Supervises the gallery manager.

• Recruits, trains, and maintains a student team large enough to sustain gallery operations (typically 5-8).

• Oversees an annual budget and filing reports.

• Writes grants to support gallery activities, fundraising, and building connections with collectors and prospective donors on behalf of the institution.

• Maintains all gallery spaces presenting exhibitions year-round in line with the university’s mission as a Hispanic Serving and Minority Serving Institution.

• Promotes the preservation and documentation of the university's permanent collection.

• Coordinates the development of marketing materials to promote upcoming events and gallery news.

• Oversees gallery expansions, including the upcoming downtown gallery space and any future university galleries spaces.

• Teaches up to 2 courses per academic year in the field of practice.

The Department of Art + Design is dedicated to cross-disciplinary, collaborative initiatives, enriching our community, and mentoring students to be professionally driven artists, designers, scholars, and creative leaders. The Department of Art + Design offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts with Teacher’s Certification, and Master of Fine Arts. The Weil Gallery is located on campus in the Center for the Arts building, while the future Downtown Gallery will occupy an off-campus facility located at 223 N. Chaparral St. They are traditional gallery spaces used for screenings, symposia, and exhibitions of work by TAMU-CC graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and visiting artists from the local, national, and international contexts. Exhibitions held at these venues serve the immediate TAMU-CC campus as well as the greater Corpus Christi community and beyond. The Department hosts or participates in a range of creative activities with entities located in the Coastal Bend community including KSpace Contemporary, The Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Rockport Art Center, and the Art Museum of South Texas, hosting or participating in a range of creative activities. Convenient access to the metropolitan centers of Houston, San Antonio, and Austin provides further access to cultural opportunities.
