Principal Software Engineering Lead

Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers Microsoft cloud services through the operation of our unified global datacenters enabling ~30% of Microsoft revenue through Commercial Cloud ($38 billion in FY20 Q1). Our team is focused on improving the productivity of Cloud operations and engineering teams, particularly by inverting how business decisions are made – accelerating our move to automated, data-driven decisions made by intelligent software that can present decision-makers with pre-optimized options.

Our team is looking for a Principal Software Engineering Lead to transform how Microsoft delivers cloud computing resources around the world. We operate at the center of Microsoft’s business transformation to ensure compute capacity is available when and where it is needed. We work with multiple engineering and business teams to connect data and systems that enable critical business decision-making.

In this role, a Principal Software Engineering Lead will work closely with business stakeholders, program managers, and other software engineers to deliver robust, high-performing, mission-critical solutions for datacenter resource management that ensure Microsoft meets availability and resiliency obligations for our cloud customers.

Responsibilities

• Guides partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams.
• Guides teams and leads identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
• Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
• Guides team to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers).
• Provide mentorship for other software engineers while influencing design patterns and coding practices
• Engage with engineers and business partners to identify opportunities to accelerate business decision making
• Move applications and services to production quickly while ensuring code quality and security.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

• 4+ years experience with distributed system design.
• 4+ years of industry experience developing software platforms in server or cloud based systems.
• 2+ years experience in computational optimization utilizing integer programming
