The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of Fire Community Preparedness Instructor to fill one (1) vacancy within the Riverside Fire Department. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering fire and life safety education programs throughout the City of Riverside. The eligibility list established may be used to fill any upcoming vacancy within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The Fire Community Preparedness Instructor performs community outreach, public education, and preparedness activities that support the Fire Department's mission of protecting life, property, and the environment. This position works with residents of all ages, schools, community organizations, businesses, public safety partners, City departments, and other stakeholders to promote fire safety, emergency preparedness, injury prevention, and disaster resilience.
Examples of duties
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver fire and life safety education programs for the community
- Conduct educational presentations and demonstrations for schools, senior groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and community events.
- Promote fire prevention, injury prevention, emergency preparedness, wildfire readiness, and community resilience initiatives.
- Participate in disaster drills, exercises, public safety events, and community outreach programs.
- Develop educational materials, presentations, brochures, newsletters, and digital content to support community risk reduction efforts.
- Collaborate with schools, community organizations, public safety agencies, healthcare partners, and other City departments to advance public safety education programs.
- Plan and coordinate community preparedness training, workshops, and special events.
- Maintain records, databases, and program statistics related to outreach and educational activities.
- Coordinate volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, and recognition activities.
- Support public information campaigns through the Department's website, social media platforms, and other communication channels.
- Assist with emergency operations and public information activities during incidents, disasters, and special events as assigned.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements to community education and preparedness initiatives.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of fire prevention, fire and life safety education, and community risk reduction.
- Public outreach, community engagement, and educational program development.
- Emergency preparedness concepts and disaster resilience strategies.
- Applicable computer software and digital communication platforms.
- Public speaking techniques and presentation methods.
- Proper grammar, editing, and proofreading practices.
Ability to:
- Develop and deliver effective educational and training programs.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences.
- Present information confidently before large and small groups.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with community members, schools, businesses, public agencies, and City staff.
- Organize and manage multiple projects and events simultaneously.
- Work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
Qualifications
Education: An associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business or Public Administration, Marketing, Public Safety, Emergency Management, Communications or a related field. Additional professional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: Two years of experience in education, training, public speaking, community outreach, communications, or related activities involving the development and delivery of information to diverse audiences
